Do you have a favorite color film?

I can't fault people for using their stock pile of their favorite film, but I also think it's important to support the films that are still produced. I hated it when Astia was discontinued, but after grumbling about it for a good while I realized that Provia 100f with a filter that has a slightly warming effect more or less brings a similar look. I also found that my Rolleiflex produces very nice pictures with Provia, even without any filter. I am also trying to learn to use Velvia. I'll keep buying Fuji slide film for as long as it's available.

What filter specifically do you use with Provia 100F? It SEEMS at least to have both higher contrast and higher saturation than Astia but when someone posted contrast curves the contrast, at least, didn't seem like it looked to me on the slides, if you follow me.

I shoot E6 for projection, so I really only shoot it in 35mm though I have some 120 and some 4x5 E100SW in the freezer.

I shot one of my remaining rolls of 120 Astia (I bought a box of assorted film on eBay that included it, have some left too) in my Yachicamat 124 and the results on the light table really made me want a medium format projector. I may have to try a slight warming filter like that with Provia 100F. It does look a bit cool to me - not objectionable and for many subjects it looks really good but it gives at least the impression of more contrast and resulting emptier shadows than Astia did (or if shadows are exposed for, closer-to-blown highlights.)

I suspect if I got that MF projector, though, I'd be stocking up on slide mounts for 6x6 and 645, shooting my Mamiya 645 Pro a lot more, and in an even bigger panic about the demise of Provia 400X and limited range of E6 films remaining. It's probably better not to do that and don my peril-sensitive sunglasses.



OTOH, it might make me cheer for Ferrania even more, though right now with the window for backing closed and no retail product to buy cheering is all I can do anyway.

+1. Once Ferrania's E6 film is no longer vaporware, that is. Right now, my favorite is Provia 100F/Precisa CT 100. I can get the Precisa locally a few bucks cheaper than the Provia. I can get the Provia from B&H for the same price as the Precisa, but I want to support local film buying where I can. Plus buying a roll or two at a time is less painful for the budget than buying a whole bunch at once.

I'm a cheapskate - I like Agfa Vista+ at £1 per cassette. Costs me £5 to have it developed and scanned to CD. At that price I don't really have to worry about the cost and it encourages them to keep on making it..

Even though I have a preference for slide film, I have to say that I really like Kodak Ektar 100. When my wife and I were visiting one of California's redwood forests recently, I thought I should bring this negative film, since the strong shadows and lights of the forest can be tricky to capture with slide film. I remember my wife grumbling that her digital camera refused to capture the shades of green, so she asked me to try with my film camera. Ektar did an excellent job, and even caught some very nice and subtle shades of green and blue reflected off the trees. So as far as negative films go, I really love Ektar (I pushed it one stop)

For slide film my favorite used to be E200, very flexible for me. Now I have Provia and Velvia. For color negatives I like Extar and Portra

E200 was a very distinctive film. I had a few rolls frozen that I shot a couple of years ago. Putting some of those slides into a show full of E100G and Provia the E200 slides just jumped out at you when you came to them. Not exactly pastel but a much lower key and probably more natural rendering. I liked it.

However when I used the quote button his post was instantly translated into normal British prices so that's the end of my attempt at humour.

What causes his prices to be nonsensical in his post but perfect in my quote?

I have tried to write his prices as per his post but it turns them into proper prices. What is going on?

You can get that "look" with Ektachrome Duplicating Slide Film. Just make sure that the ISO is set at 50 and development time for FD is set at 10:45. Cheers

I never liked the Kodachrome muddy skies. For a while Kodak though that the color of the sky in Rochester New York was the color of the sky in the rest of the World.

I have no idea. Was clearly the pound sign when I typed the post - might be that the server that APUG uses does not have a pound sign in its character set so displayed the character code instead. I am hoping that readers will have realised that the prices were '1' and '5' respectively.

I'm in danger of showing my age but I used to love Agfachrome CT 18, I suspect I may be in the minority on that one though! Often made holiday locations look better than they were in reality while maintaining good skin tones somehow.

Many people say they do not survive well but luckly mine have lasted well in not so ideal storage conditions (e.g the attic).

Fujichrome Sensia 100 (RD), as it existed from 1994, until its replacement with the blander, yellower Sensia II (RA) in 1997.

Kodachrome 25, Portra 160NC and Polaroid 42 are also missed.
