I travel a lot with my gear and I was thinking of getting some insurance for it. I've heard I can do a floater policy on my existing rental/property insurance, but if I make any money using this gear it may not be covered.

For more commercial/professional use I got a quote from Athos for 470 a year for about 15k worth of gear on a 250 dollar deductible. Seems a bit steep.

Anyone here have insurance they like and would recommend?

TIA

You may want to consider an Umbrella policy with a replace cost for lost or stolen cameras and lenses.

I used to. Then all of my gear got stolen one day (back in my digital days), insurance paid up (bless them) and I replaced only the bare necessities. I forewent the Canon L-lenses etc. and just bought what actually made practical sense to me at that point. Since that turns out to be mostly old junk from an economic perspective, I've since discontinued my insurance.

$470 sounds about right. I used to have commercial liability insurance, now it’s $504/yr through ppa.com with $2M coverage. If you are shooting professionally a lot of places will require some proof of liability insurance. They also offer equipment insurance only up to $15k, for $323/yr. Alternatively if you’re only looking for insurance from theft you can probably add a rider to your homeowner’/renter’s policy which hopefully shouldn’t cost much.

When I shot professionally a few years ago, I had equipment theft cover (max €10k), public liability (up to €1m), and professional indemnity insurance (€250k) for a yearly premium of just under €500.

Some wedding venues would refuse admission if the photographer had no public liability insurance.

I included the value of my more expensive cameras when I took out coop insurance, but I don't think that would cover loss during travel. Still I imagine it would be useful in case of flood damage for example.

Ok that’s good to know! Thanks! I am seriously considering it!

just a standard floater on the existing property insurance; watch the small print!
