Sinar Norma Handy Test TMX400 HC110 4 by Nokton48, on Flickr

OK this is WHY you need HIGH SPEED FILM in this camera. Sinar Norma Handy 4x5 65mm F8 Schneider Super Angulon. TMX400 does push better than HP5+ IMO, although the difference is slight. The central part of the image is well exposed, at the four edges the Cosine Effect causes light falloff. I made this exposure at 1/60 HANDHELD, operating right at the edge of being able to get proper exposure without a tripod. Pushing the film to 800 or 1600 will increase lower light shooting possibilities. Here I got myself into a position where I was boxed in by brush and tree limbs and basically couldn't move.. So this camera is indeed HANDY when you need to get the shot from a cramped position. Neg digitized on Skier 4x5 Box Full Power Sony Nex7 Zeiss Touit 2.8/50M. At this closer-up shooting distance, the lens does cover all four corners, due to the image circle increasing. No corner falloff on this one.

Nice work, Nokton! I hope you don't mind, but I did a quick Invert on your photos to make them easier to evaluate

By the way, my set-up is are pictured below. I made the lens cone and some other parts on. a 3D printer. Other components I purchased from Miroslav at Custom Camera Building.

He has a really cool set of products for converting Sinar P standards into Sinar Handys. Check it out here:

Cheers,

Paul

Hmmm. This is giving me a lot of ideas! I have an Olde F Standard around, wondered what I would do with it. Perhaps an upgrade. Meanwhile, working the TMX400 pushed 2 stops, to determine a baseline. For working in shady situations. Works A+ in bright light scenarios. Any chance with that 65mm F8 you could post a few shots using it? Would add to the knowledge pool. Thanks.

I will most definitely post some photos. Right now, I don't have any that I am satisfied with, but I will get some up here soon! You should definitely give Miroslav a holler. You could actually have another working camera out of that F standard for short money - and he does great work!

Best,

Paul

SONY DSC by Nokton48, on Flickr

Paul,
I don't consider mine to be an easy camera to use. Handholding it I really try to take my time with it.
Way easier on a smaller tripod, I like my original Leitz Tiltalls for carryin'.

Very impressed with his 3D printed Tophat, made to my specifications to work with the Sinar Norma Shutters I have. Forward spaced, very long rear lens group. I can definitely foresee ordering more of these for some of my other lenses. This whole thing will go on my 5x7 Norma, on a Manfrotto or Zone Vi tripod. The lens is a 500mm Schneider F6.7 Tele-Xenar, in Compound Shutter. My repairman advised me to not use a cable release with the shutter, due to internals. So now I can use this lens with my Sinar Norma Shutters. Seems robust to me, we will see.

I also bought one of his 35mm film in a 120 back adapter, which was like $13.

Here are the long promised photos from the Handy. I have been doing some traveling for work, so I didn't have much time to photograph. These are quite low res, but show off the sharpness of the 65mm Super Angulon. These are all on fresh Ilford HP5+ shot at EI. 400 on a monopod. I metered the scene with an incident meter (Sekonic L-508). All were taken at f/22, scale focused to yield an effective DOF of roughly 5.5' -> infinity. Shutter speeds varied from 1/15 sec to 1/60 sec on a partly cloudy day around 1 PM. I developed the films in D76 1:1 for 13 minutes in a Patterson tank on a Film Photography Project QL-45 JP reel. These are quick scans of the negatives taken on a Sony A7RIV with a Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/2.8

Best,

Paul

Very cool lens - that's an awesome piece of glass! Miroslav does excellent work. I have a few nice big lenses I had adapters made to front mount into some an Acme/Ilex shutters I had hanging around. I am lucky that I live only about 30 minutes from S.K.Grimes' shop in Woonsocket, RI.

The list right now includes:

12in. f/6.3 Kodak Commercial Ektar in a #4 Acme/Ilex
12in. f/6.8 Goerz Dagor in a #4 Acme/Ilex, which it shares with a 14 in. f/5.6 Dallmeyer Dallon Tele-Anastigmat
10in. f/6 Wollensak Veritas in an Alpha Ready-Set

These are all mounted on Toyo/Omega 4x5 flat lens boards. (I have the long rail and double bellows for that camera just in case I need the extra draw).

I am looking forward to retirement to be able to shoot these more. However, with the way things are going in Washington, I may have to work longer than I planned!

I am still messing around with using the 35mm adapters in 120 cameras. I have an adapter for the Pentax 6x7 and one for the Fuji 6x9 RF. I tried out the Pentax version once, but I wasn't able to keep the film fat enough - even with the pressure plate in the 220 position. I have to do some more experimenting. I like the image on sprocket look.

I love my Tiltall tripods as well! Lightish weight and rock solid. With the Handy, I wanted to test how low I could go with the shutter speed and still handhold.

Here are a few more with the Handy/65mm Super Angulon. These were all handheld (no monopod), taken at f/22 and shutter speeds around 1/30 or 1/15 sec. The film was old (expired in 1980s) Tri-X 320 rated at 320 and developed in D-76 1:1 for 13mm. Scanned with Sony and Nikkor like the previous shots. The shot of the small stream was made to test the flare resistance of the Angulon. I spot metered the shadow areas on these and placed them in Zone III to determine exposure.

HI Hiroko,

That is a custom grip I designed and made on my 3D printer out of PLA. I mounted this to the side rail of the camera with a rail mount I purchased from Miroslav at Custom Camera Building (CCB)), who sells a bunch of different parts for customizing Sinar cameras:

https://customcamerabuilding.com/en...ib62Z2UTL__icE_JStJ3CNfki23v7xN_b6sdFmC5Y1fG_

I also made a small block for the opposite side of the camera to hold a shutter release cable. I have an original Sinar pistol grip that screws into the tripod socket plate (also made by CCB) on the bottom rail of the camera , but I don't like how that grip stops you from using a tripod or monopod

DOF Indicator 65 F8 Sinar Handy 4x5 Domke Gripper Strap TMX800 by Nokton48, on Flickr

I taped a 4x5 DOF Kodak Master Guide, set to 65mm F8 Schneider Super Angulon on Sinar Norma Handy 4x5 camera.
Possible to shoot at F8 with the Schneider Super Angulon,
This time loaded Graphmatic Graphic 4x5 loaded with TMax400 push processed to Ei 800, no big stretch. I have Schneider advertisements in the day, which state that the Super Angulon is perfectly good to use WIDE OPEN. Sharp and the extra speed is welcome in some light. Using this camera can be right on the edge of usuability, but it IS doable with very interesting results. F8 aids in hand holding this camera without tripod. Very HANDY indeed!

Camera laid on three sheets of Architectural Vellum, on my FOBA Glass Sweep Table. A Broncolor Balloon underneath the vellum adds underlighting. A Broncolor Hazylight overlights from overhead. Broncolor Boxlite 40's left and right at 45 degrees, very close and adding nice highlights.
