Infra red is one type of film I wish I had hoarded, but I guess these days buying an old digital cam molded for ir is the way to go

I don't do color. Way to difficult to print. To me "stockpiling" means using outdated film. If one uses fresh film all the time that is not "stockpiling." I have no interest in using expired film when fresh film is available for the same price.

I was more meaning recently discontinued film that is not quite or just expired and there isn't really a good fresh equivalent.

When I stockpile film that is about to be discontinued, the film goes into the freezer as soon as I get it home. And stockpiling is a method to prevent the hoarders from hoarding.

Hoarding color is hit or miss. People have noted that even Provia 400x shifts a bit a few years after expiration date. My 2005 e100gx stash is blue and white film at this point

I've heard about 10 yr old slide film being basically blank.

But I've also heard of two decade old Ektachrome 64 being okay... I guess its REALLY picky about storage and dependent on the emulsion ?

Oh no I just bought some 2008 GX and 2016 400x. Just received some EPP (expired 2005) slides and they're really faded. In bright light it looks okay. I probably should have rated it 80 or 64 rather than 100. I also received EPR 64 slides. They're perfect and I don't even know when the date of expiration is on those.

When I shot slides that was my go to film. I would bulk load the film and shoot it all during one trip to Europe every year. For years we spent a month in Europe whether or not we needed to.

I had 10 rolls of Konica professional 160 in the Freezer, all fogged. I think the expiration date was 2009, it was from last run from 2006. I shot some in 2010 but then left the left just too long. I have a few rolls of Kodacolor 100 that I intend to shoot in short order. On the other hand I was given a roll of GAF 100 slide film that had been frozen, even with time and struggling mixing the GAF slide kits I got better images than from the Konica.

There's a shop that still sells Konica 160 in self rolled rolls. Expired in 2009. I bought a set but haven't had time to load them.

Here is no Kodak Gold in regular stores anymore,

Unless answered elsewhere, no more than six days ago did I see rolls of Kodak Gold 200 and Gold 400 hanging from the racks at a Wal-Mart in Toronto. I'm pretty sure there's a Wal-Mart Supercentre around Milton.

I found the rolls buried in back of the electronics department, but they were definitely in stock alongside a few disposable cameras loaded with the same.

My local Phamacy had some last week when I was picking up antihistamine...

But they also had BW400CN on shelf a long time (+12 months) after Kodak indicated it had been stopped.

I have at least 400 rolls stored in the freezer, most of it bought on eBay, and 99% of it stock of old brands that are no longer made.

Some of it is simple curiosity - I never shot with Agfa Ultra, so the half dozen rolls I bought will be, likely my sole chance of ever using it (I run a photography blog, so stuff like this is always worth writing a post about). I used Neopan for a long-term project, and buying a brick of it allowed me to get to a half-way point before doing the second half on another film stock.

Some of it is more long-term; I love that classic cross-processed Lomo look, and the best films for that were the original Agfa Precisa and Kodak Elite Chrome 100. So 300-odd rolls of those two emulsions might keep me going for another 8 or 10 years... and in the meantime someone might have Kickstarted a replacement...

But in amid this i make sure I buy new regularly. Simply buying expired film secondhand is a good way to hasten the demise of other films.

I use many types of film. I have many cold stored, expired films they do not make anymore. I buy new as well as expired. I even use lomography film. I just love analog anything really. Especially when it comes to art and technology.

i bought a lot of 220 astia when i found a good deal on em. that was three years ago and looking back I did just what I said i would not do. I have been saving it for a special occasion and every time I have a chance to use it I find an excuse not to. So I now no longer hoard. I buy film to use it.

This illustrates the problem I have with hoarding (and, apparently destroya sees it the same). Most hoarders find excuses to keep saving their film. Unused film has no value. It only accrues value by the images fixed on it. When you buy film, you're really buying possibilities, and potential. Not using it delivers neither.

I have not had this problem. When I am going to a red rock area, I bring the Ultra Color film. When I am going to shoot fall colors, I bring the Vivid Color or Ektar film. The Plus-X or Tri-X320 for portraits. The emulsions are not longer available, so that means I make the usage count without being wasted and I use those films.

I think if I was hoarding and the stock was getting low rather than just never using the remaining rolls, I'd try to come up with some sort of project to use the last batch on.

That happens too.
