Dial in Filtration

I've simply used the settings recommended by Ilford for the dichroic head that I've got. Seems to work fine. Should I be doing my own calibrating?

Gavin, once you get up and running with a dichroic head, make sure to pull out a contrasty, difficult-to-print negative and have a go at split filtering. I just went dichroic recently, and split filtering has been the big revelation. I made some prints of pure white dogwood blossoms. I got detail in the highlights, right next to almost-black shadow areas, with no dodging or burning. Amazing!

The idea that you can give two separate exposures of different filtration to the entire print and get something that can't be duplicated by a single exposure of intermediate filtration is voodoo to me. Jay

It is voodoo. Simple densitometery can demonstrate that.

Hmmm....I bought a used Saunders LPL dichroic enlarger with dial-in filtration and discovered, after extensive testing, that using only the magenta dial gave me complete tonality (after thoroughly testing combinations with both the magenta and yellow dials with the cyan dial at zero and discovering a lack of satisfactory tonality). I wonder why this was so? Does anybody know?

Are you saying that you could not lower the contrast of your VC paper of choice by adding yellow alone as compared to no filter?
