Error During Development. Seen them enough, the air is not letting the developer going back to the main chamber. You can open the lid here and there and make sure it goes back down, or, try more developer than recommended by the tank.

I guess you are aware that the 'riding up' problem is solved by the preventer clip that Paterson make, particularly for single 120 reels ?

Thank you ChimneyFinder. Neither my Patterson tanks nor my separately purchased reels came with a clip or any mention of one. In fact, the dealer suggested that I use 2 reels when I do 35 mm film just to prevent such riding up. I will have to start scouring the internet for such a clip!

Hold the reel in place by placing a thick rubber band immediately above the reel and wrapping it a couple of times around the central stem - as long as it is reasonably snug it should do the job well.

I don't want to be pedantic as others may use rubber bands, but if you do rinse it first (and dry) as new ones can have a powdery coating and old ones can have stuff clinging to them and they detioriate quickly.

To keep my reel in place I use an old plastic 35mm film "can". I just cut a section of it the right "height" (open at both ends - and about or less than a cm) to keep the reel in place without obstructing the lid. You should be able to just hear the reel move a bit when inverting.
