Developer with best tonality

I wouldn't stress too much about the developer. It makes probably the least difference compared to all the other parts of the chain. Just pick one and stick with it until you figure out your best film speed and development time for the way you want to print. Xtol is my favorite fine grain developer by far. Rodinal is great if you value sharpness over grain.
