One of the directions I see people take is to try to move things to a point when the actual function is one of discussion.

You don't do that by starting off with a couple of ridiculous assertions.

Ridiculous is a relative term and dismissive out of hand. In some ways saying that is little more than sneering which is no contribution at all. Now redefining or offering counterpoint, that is something different and useful. It doesn't take a genius to appreciate that you have much to offer.
