Delta 3200 flat at 1200iso

I've been trying out delta 3200 lately. I have a fujufilm ga645 that shoots max 1200iso that I'm using a lot right now and I also shot a roll through a ricoh ff-90 35mm at 1200. It's incredibly flat. I'm using D-76 and the times / temps from the massive dev chart app. Does it only give good contrast when pushed to 1600 or beyond? Some tips would be appreciated.

Take the meter reading for 3200 to start with OR take the meter reading at 1200 and close the lens 1.5 f/stops. Either way develop normally.

If it's using DX coding and it maxes out at 1200, then it could go to the default DX which could be 100 ISO.

It is designed to be low contrast and, most importantly, to build contrast slowly and repeatably and dependably when you increase development past the development which will yield ISO speed.

Whether or not you decrease exposure should be determined by how the shadow detail is rendering. Whether or not you increase highlight density and therefore contrast by increasing development should be determined by how the highlights are rendering.

I suggest you stick to the timings given by Kodak's spec sheet. Mass Dev timings can be misleading.

Try Ilford DD-X developer. It's a fantastic combination.

I have always used the times for 3200 when developing Ilford Delta 3200 even though I expose it at 800-1250. Doesn't matter what developer I use either.

Delta 3200 120 is a gorgeous film.

That I can relate with it! I used at 1600 and even with underexposed frames I got good results. I even had to use the film in daylight, in the summer and got good negatives.

My experience/observation with this film:

It's meant to be pushed. Since pushing increases contrast, I suppose they made it a low-contrast film under normal conditions to compensate for that. I've generally shot it at EI-1600 and developed for EI-3200, with good results.

It does seem like, normally, a low contrast film...sometimes that can be used to advantage, ie. portraits.

How are you adjusting print contrast?

I can barely adjust the contrast, it is way too flat. I will try dev at 3200 next time.

Try using EI 1200 and DDX 1+4 15mins @ 20dec as a starting point.

D76 will only get you around 1000 speed and you may need to push development to achieve that. DDX gives a slight boost in speed and will help shorten the toe giving better shadow seaparation.
