M Carter, I knew that some distillers waste water like that, but never heard of anything about RO filters... I should research a little more.

Some RO systems do in fact waste water by running almost constantly ans dumping it into the drain system. However there are systems which only run when the tap is open and do not dump any into the drain. When I switched to the latter system my water bill dropped significantly.

Ian Grant above recommended a filtered water pitcher. I have a filter container made by Pūr that uses a replaceable filter and is meant to hold a couple of gallons of water in one's refrigerator for drinking. I keep it on a shelf in the bathroom and keep it topped up with water. As a result, gases such as chlorine and air bubbles evaporate out naturally and I've never had a problem with the water.

I've searched a lot and didn't find steam distillers for sale here in Brazil. Strange, but... Go figure!

I can get deionizing filters for under $100 US here. These have a very low flow rate, though. The better ones cost between $100 and $150.

Reverse osmosis filters are pretty expensive. Simple 3-stage, 10 gallons/day filters cost over $400 US without a pressurizing pump (over $100 extra)!

From what I've read, RO filters are suitable substitutes for distillers. Chemists on duty, please confirm this!

In case you need cheap and reliable distiller within the price range I posted above, then get in touch with local dental equipment distributors / importers or get it from ebay, etc.

Well... I got a 20gph deionizer. If needed, I can add an RO membrane in the future (and a pressurizing pump), but I think this will do. Cost was a little over $100 US.
