Deepest, flatest, mattest, blackest, PAINT!

I protected my yashica mat today against internal flare... a real problem that i hope to have solved with some black matte self adesive felt velvety thing made in germany and waaayyyyyy less reflective than the original paint... but now i feel i have to protect all my lens boards... because some are (by comparaison) really shiny... but PAINT would be easyer...

i have tryed some matte black spray paint things, and besides not being really black they aren´t matte either...



How can i make this paint... i read that adding some coarse corn starch in some matte paint would help...

Any help?????

We actually went through this exercise at work (building an optical instrument for an opthamologist) and ended
up sourcing some horrendously expensive "Avian Black" from a place in NH, because we needed low reflectance at
an infrared wavelength. The Krylon 1602 came up over and over in our searches...

By the way... i used a stationary black matte self adesive product not the one that is used in telescopes, but i think it will work, if i cannot make or get a paint that i really see that it´s an improvement over the regular matte black paint i will use this adesive to improve the internal flare in my LF lensboards and in my laborator 1000, it´s cheap and easy... although i really would like to get a paint that would became a sandpaper really matte surface!

Yep, that's the stuff.

I believe it was reformulated due to environmental and durability (it's pretty soft once dry) concerns. Unfortunately the replacement is not as "dead" as the original. I bought up several cans for future use before it changed. I read somewhere that the original formula is/was used by amateur telescope makers to coat the insides of their tubes.

I think 3M used to make a product that almost sucked the light out of a room, the flattest black hole of a spray paint I've ever seen, or should I say didn't see.

Black fence paint from Tractor Supply, comes in gallon cans, dries hard and very flat black.

The flatest black I have found is Winsor Newton Jet black Designers Gouache. Being a water colour; Mixing it with a small amount of acrylic matte medium will allow it to be applied to surfaces other than paper. You would have to experiment with the ratio to get the needed durability and water resistance. Price would also be reasonable.

The original stuff (first link in Peter's post #3) has a squared off cap, the newer stuff has a rounded cap. As soon as you see it you'll know the difference...

I'm going to an old harware store where the guy was getting the paint mostly for me. So it's possble he still has a shelf full.... I'm taking it all!

I use the stuff all the time. My last 6 cans lasted a year.

I found the black matt from model car shops the best, any matt spray never worked. Humbrol No33 I belive

Using the above material "Avian Black" as a starting point for a quick search through the MSDS for this "MIL-DTL-64159 TY-II Black 383 CARC" product, I have found one that lists the pigment as 6% Carbon Black (by weight) in a urethane coating.

So for a home brew version it would look to be your choice of clear base "paint" and add by weight 6% Carbon Black. That's a lot of carbon black.

Ok, you asked for a home formulation, you got it! How useful this is, I can't say...

From Wall & Jordan's Photographic Facts & Formulas:

Black for Cameras - This may be used for wood or leather, inside or out:

Nigrosine, spirit soluble ------------------- 2.5 g
Bismark brown ---------------------------- 0.65 g
Denatured alcohol or methylated spirit - 3.0 ccm
Aniline ------------------------------------- 29 ccm

Heat the dyes with the alcohol until dissolved, and then add the aniline; apply with a brush and dry before the fire or in the sun. Or, for a dead matt varnish, lampblack may be rubbed up with gold size or shellac varnish, using as little of the liquid as possible; then thin down with turpentine.

I've always found Tremclad Flat Black very useful. It sticks to just about everything. I've used it on enlarging easels, darkroom walls adjacent to the enlarger and even an old chrome Star D tripod.

Krylon make a spray paint, its under their Camo line, I've used the black along with other colours when spray painting one of my rifles and its very flat. I think its SKU 4290.

Flat black. Get it from an auto shop or hardware store. You do NOT need a proprietary manufacturer's internal pain or flocking material. Many pinhole, panorama and LF home-made cameras have been treated with plain ol' flat black.
Not matte black. Not semi-gloss black, not low-sheen...not even pot belly black. Flat black.
Contact self adhesive flocking is fine.
