You're likely much more disciplined than I am but when I travel by motorcycle, I find myself not stopping to grab shots as much. The commotion of parking, dismounting, shedding safety gear (jacket/helmets), retrieving the camera gear has me passing up some shots as not worthy of the stop. You seem to be photo-first focused where that's not generally the purpose of cycle travel for me. These issues may not matter for you and the right motorcycle can get you places that 4 wheels could struggle. I have a small bag with a CL and 40 mounted and a Color Skopar 25, small flash and small incident meter. It covers quite well virtually any situation for the type of applications I need on the road.

I'm the same way, but we're planning to spend time off the motorcycles too. We plan to camp and stay in cabinas along the Carretera Austral (Rt 7 in Chile), and do some backpacking/hiking in Torres del Paine National Park in Argentina. After 3 weeks on the motorcycles our spouses and some friends will join us in Santiago for a week of sightseeing, touring, and wine tasting. Plenty of opportunities for taking photos.

Looks like you've settled on a very similar setup to what I'm planning to bring.

If you're after the absolutely smallest and lightest LTM wide angle, there's the Chroma "Double Glass". It's 24mm with a fixed f/11 aperture and fixed focus at the hyperfocal distance, claiming 1.5m to infinity in focus. It weighs well under an ounce and isn't much bigger than a body cap when mounted on a camera. It's obviously not everyone's cup of tea, but if you can find one it might be handy to have in your kit.

This would be redundant since you've got the more-flexible Voigtlander 25mm but might prove of interest to someone down the road.

Chroma's web site shows it as currently sold out, I don't know if there are plans for another production run.

Looks like a fun little lens to turn an LTM into a point & shoot.

The Snapshot Skopar isn't as small, but as you said it's more versatile. Still tiny compared to any SLR lens of the same focal length, and it's probably sharper than the Chroma. I'm also using a Summitar to 39mm filter adapter, so the same filters can be used with both lenses (the Skopar 25 has a 39mm filter thread).

I suppose instead of bringing the 50 Summitar, to save space I could bring the little 3.5 Elmar - that would be about the size of a body cap when retracted into the camera. But I probably won't because of the resolution edge that the Summitar gives me, as well as a wider aperture. Also with the Elmar it wouldn't really save space because it would require a second set of filters.

What about a folder with a coupled rangefinder like a Super Ikonta III for that larger format look? Obviously a bit late now, but get it serviced and it should be very dependable. .

Thanks for the suggestion. I've used folders on motorcycle trips before (I have a couple Ikontas with Tessar lenses, and one of the older Mamiya six folders), but they're just not versatile enough for this trip. One lens and slow workflow work okay for certain landscapes, but not so much as a walk around camera, or those wide perspectives that I sometimes need. Also not as efficient with film, and the lenses aren't very fast. I think the best lens available for the Ikonta is a Tessar which is a fine lens, but with good Leica glass I've always been able to get better or just as good quality photographs despite the smaller format. A quality photograph isn't just resolution anyway. I've had too many missed opportunities with a folder as a primary camera.

Might be okay as a second camera, but I truly do not have room for a second camera and the appurtenances to go with it. I'm already purging things from my bags to keep things manageable. It's a lot more complicated to do a fly and motorcycle ride than fly and rent a car or take a tour. Full riding gear consisting of helmet, armored and weather protective clothing, boots, clothing layers to stay warm between 35 and 85 degrees while riding all day, camping gear, and it all has to fit on a rental motorcycle that's not a weighed down pig.

I finished the Motorcycle trip and back in Santiago now - will head home within a week.

Haven’t developed the film yet of course, but am pretty happy with the camera and lenses that I brought. At the last minute I also threw in a 135mm Elmar. Glad I did for those tighter perspectives.

A few more days of sightseeing in Santiago and Valparaiso and we’ll head back. Nice to skip part of the winter - sunny and warm here.

Some that I scanned yesterday:

Mostly used the 50mm Summitar, but the 25mm and 135mm lenses proved to be more than worth the cost of bringing them.

Yes... The Pasta Express. Old age and some health issues has me cutting way back. Sold some and down to one sport tourer (Norge 8V) that's comfy enough for me these days. What a trip you were on! I'm envious!

Nice bike. I've never ridden a Guzzi, but have a friend who owns the local Triumph-Guzzi-Aprilia-Beta-Royal Enfield dealership. Riding a Triumph now, but maybe I'll try a Guzzi at some point. Retired early so I could travel more. So far so good.

Only one comment on the photos? I suppose this is a camera forum, clearly not a photography forum.

@Axelwik ,
A bit harsh, I think
It might make a difference if you put the photos into a separate thread, titled something like "Photographs - travels through Chile". In the "Photographers" sub-forum, I think.
That way those who identified this thread initially as being about gear can look to the new thread for the photos. If you would like, we could move your posts to their own thread with a title like that - feel free to ask.
