Does anyone have any good experiences of using these with VC/MG papers with MG filters (under lens )? I've got the opportunity to get one for my wall mounted 504... not sure about it yet.

Leon I used one for about 30 years, I made a plate to sit it on a Johnsons V54 Enlarger.

Never had a problem with VC paper, Ilford, Agfa, or Forte, in fact the past few years I only used VC after Record Rapid was dropped. The only reason I don't use it now is I upgraded to a 10x8 enlarger and gave the enlarger & head away. It's still in use

that's good news Ian - so it's not all doom and gloom then. I've heard some horror stories! I might give it a go. I'm getting a bit annoyed with my varicon showing every single minute mark, scratch and miniscule bits of dust. thought that might make it a bit easier.
