Hi
I'm ready to buy a secondhand 504, here is a question for negative carrier
I saw many people use universal carrier(pic1). they have some glassless metal carrier inserts for different film size, and two glasses for 4 moveable blades(pic2 and pic3).

my question is

if I want to use glasses, I must use 4 moveable blades, If I want to use metal film mask, I cannot use glasses?
I'm looking for the carrier which have different glasses carrier insert suit for different film size. maybe it doesn't exist

That is usually the case, to have only the largest size glass and use masks. Is there some reason you don't want to do that?

You can use any combination of glass and glassless insert in a De Vere 504 carrier as long as there are no protrusions that will stop the carrier closing. None of them will interfere with the masking blades.

In other words, use the glassless insert you'd normally use on the top on the bottom (& tape over the holes) if you are wanting to use AN glass on the top & glassless on the bottom.

Or just get a few spare glass inserts & use light opaque tape to make apertures exactly the size you need. If you are really bored, draw up some bottom half masks & get them laser cut from aluminium.

All of these have been day-to-day things for decades whether with De Vere or other enlargers that saw professional use.

I need adjust the blade every times, but no problem,I'm just checking to see if there are other carriers that I don't know about.

Thanks!I think this is the best way to ensure that the film is flat without repeatedly adjusting the blade and easel
