Showered, shaved and eager. Sun is up and it's going to be a beautifull day!
Hmm... omen no.1 ?
Leave the house at 7:00am. Figured 40 minute average to ElevatorGallery, factor in morning traffic and I would have plenty of time to get a few photo opportunities. I mean Bob wants me there for 9:30 right? Lots of time.
The 2nd worse traffic I have had the pleasure of driving in.(I luv RubberNeckers)
Arrive at Elevator at 9:02am. Sit in car listen to local radio. Rolling Stones' Sympathy for the Devil starts.
Omen #2?
Bob Carnie arrives with coffee in hand. I follow him in, oblivious to the look of a man who (not a morning person) has been doing 12 hour(min.) days for 3 straight months and has not yet finished his coffee.
Hey, I'm on a roll with these omens.
Strange, the partners and assistants are not here. Wonder why?
I'm handed a paint brush and a can of paint and grunted(asked?) that I would touch up some of the new woodwork put up yesterday. No problem! Luckily (for me) the paint also matches the walls. I'm really sorry about the carpet Bob, I'm sure it will come out.
9:32am Kevin arrives followed by the assistants. Bob has finished his coffee. Coincidence? Lesson learned.
Bob, now speaking coherently, says he needs my help in one of the darkrooms. Me! Help Bob! In a darkroom! Visions of grandure float through my head. Enter the not yet darkroom where bookcases (full of course) a roller, paintcan, broom all greet me. "Floor needs painting." Bubble bursts and dreams crash. I even managed to get most of the paint on the floor. Did i say I was sorry Bob? I even offered to touch up the walls...
With that job finished, and still eager to help (yes, yes, I know), I'm off in search of Bob and the next chore. I figured I did (fairly) good on both jobs and all the painting is finished... I enter the office and announce that the job is done. Room instantaniously empties.
Omen #3, missed.
Bob smiles (Omen#4?) "come with me".
Elevator Gallery is a fairly large operation. Lots of prints done everyday. Lots of prints washed. Lots of prints dried. Which of course means, lots of drying screens. Bob points at a stack of screens, points at large sink, points at me, smiles again. Ok no problem, it's not even a big stack (maybe...20 screens?)
Bob's smile gets bigger. Points again, another stack. And another, and another. A glint comes to Bob's eye and is now smiling to rival the Grinch from that Christmas tale. Leads me another room and points, and points, then points again. Is it me, or is each stack larger than the last? Now I understand why the assistants always look so busy when Bob is around
Stomach sinks and Omens #2 and 3 finally sink into my not so eager brain.
Lesson learned? Of course not!
Bob, again I'm really, really sorry about all that water. I'm sure the walls will eventually dry out and I did mop up most of it.
Bob asked me not to come in the next morning, so I could pick up Mr. Rudman (MR T. RUDMAN!) at the airport instead. I know how much there is still to be done, but Bob was pretty insistant. I was honoured. Last night he asked me again not to come in this morning, so I could pick Sean (SEAN!) up.
Wow! I must have done really good!

Story is mostly true with some very minor imbelishments (ok not so minor). I would like to take this opportunity to say Bob really isn't evil, just misunderstood.Ok actually he's a good guy, just don't interupt his coffee.

Is that the Rolling Stones I hear...

Well... if it makes you feel any better, I can tell Bob that you were an excellent volunteer photo outing guide, and that I thoroughly enjoyed myself at the Toronto Brick Mill, and that I am sure that my dry cough and chest pains have nothing to do with the asbestos and dust in the air and ground all around that place...

Seriously though, thanks for a wonderful time!!!

Cheers, Krystyna

another reason to regret not go to the conference. I will send in my application (to the head of the house) earlier next time.
