I figured we'd start with the photograms, then Art's polaroid transfers, then Bruce's paper demo. That way, if prople decide to try the photograms, the paper will be perhaps a little dry to take home!

Don't forget to bring some paper, and color transparencies if you want to try the processes. I figured I'd bring some extra chemistry so we don't use too much of the school's supply.

And we'll rotate folks in and out with hanging the show. We need to get that done, but I want everyone to see whatever demos they want.

How does that sound??

Drew... if you're coming from the Cape, maybe take 128 north to Rt. 2, and approach the school from the west? From Boston, you basically have to go through Cambridge, and get on RT 2 at Alewife.

We have paper that was donated, and a whole bunch of donated chemistry. Don't freak if you can't bring your own stuff. The show should hang quickly. I've done a few of these.

We can also have a couple of funky old brass lenses (petzvals and the like for anything from 2x3 to 8x10) and a speed graphic to shoot 'em if folks want to do some portraits. I'll set up a room for it. I have a polaroid back or two, a big old century studio 8x10 with a brassie or two for it (paper negs? film and soup before you leave?) I can bring in all sorts of weird stuff for those of us who like to play...

The oldest public swimming pool in the US is in town. Concord is nearby, with the whole "Ye olde taverne" type thing. Lots of beautiful churches, town buildings from the 1880s, etc. Lincoln has a wealth of beautiful buildings.

The "chapel" Suzanne speaks of is an Asher Benjamin plan book building, built in 1840 in CT and moved here, stick by stick, in 1963. No longer used for any type of church gathering, it is still one of the prettiest structures around. The entire thing is built on the basis of the golden ratio.

Works for me.

It was a good day...

I just got back to my motel room after being out in Cambridge and Boston with Whitey and Art. Although it is late, I wanted to post a few photos I took today. I have more than these, but am too tired to go through any more. I hope you enjoy. Please do not feel offended if you were at the belmont Hill School today and your photo is not included.

Thanks for posting the photos, James. Sounds like you guys had a great night out!

I would also like to thank Ed Los, Papagene's friend for demonstrating his photogram technique. They are gorgeous, and I'm looking forward to trying some for myself! And thank you to Art for the Polaroid transfer demonstration. Those are a lot of fun. And lastly, thanks to Bruce Barlow for sharing his paper/paper developer shootout. That was a really fun exercise! And seeing you in the video with Fred Picker was great. Picked up a few darkroom ideas by watching that!

A few of us will get together this afternoon for the show... which looks great! It's been a fun all APUG weekend here in New England! Thanks to everyone who came.

In that first photo posted by JamesG, you see the cranky Bill Hahn (skeptical character standing on the right) face that JustK managed to avoid in her portrait from the March workshop. I guess I was doubtful about polaroid "gunk" being transferred to other surfaces....

Actually, I'd like to thank all the workshop leaders. Thanks to Art we got to see a lot of prints from the APUG print/postcard exchange, an unexpected pleasure....
Thanks to Bruce we got a chance to do the paper/developer exercise; we all should be thankful for all the time he put into that. Watching the Fred Picker video was a revelation to me also (I'm not very experienced in wet darkroom work). Ed's photograms were great too....

Watching Whitey and Gene hang the show was fun too, kind of like watching a Laurel and Hardy movie (just kidding!).

And thanks to Suzanne for organizing it all....

Thanks to everyone who either set this up or led the troops during the various workshops but especially to Whitey as he allowed me to use the school's darkroom (1st time in a darkroom in about 15 years) to process some sheet film (I think they were a bit underexposed but still quite usable) and also to Whitey for that "fully manual" folding 6x9 camera which I will bring to the next meeting and give it to someone else to experiment with.

Richard and I had a really good time! Yeah, I still have a lot of fun with the paper/developer exercise. And who was that guy in the video?
