Damaging negatives

The only way, for me, to get images for my site is to scan my negatives. However, whenever I scan my films it is always on my mind:

can that strong light from scanning actually damage my negatives?

I scan both negatives and slides. The scanner light is certainly no stronger than the light in a slide projector or film enlarger.
