D76 Pushing 320txp and Plus-X

Hello,

I use Kodak D76 as my primary developer, but I've recently been using tri-x 320 and plus x. For one reason or another, I'd like to push these 2 stops and I haven't been able to find any info from Kodak or massive dev chart on d76.

Does these combos just not work? It looks like xtol is the published recommended developer, but I’d rather not add another developer if I can help it. Has anyone here had success using d76 to push these films?

I would be surprised if Tri-X 320 would respond well to pushing, given its curve shape with most developers.
If I was going to experiment with pushing and D-76, I would note what percentage increase Kodak recommends for X-Tol and apply the same increase to the D-76 times for "box" speed.

I really wish I could get tri-x 400 but don't think they make it in 4x5... I want to try street photography with it and want fast speed so I can get easy zone focus. Experimental, so I'm okay trying a few sheets.

The plus x was a mistake, I shot a roll without accounting for an orange filter on my rangefinder. I have rodinal and might just stand develop, but I've been preferring how normal development looks compared to stand with pushed film.

You should be able to get TMAX-400 in 4x5, that’s my stock film.

The Plus-X... is it expired? What are the exposure circumstances? Can you describe the difference between highlight and shadow in Zone terms or in terms of stops?

This is very old Ilford 4x5 HP5 (not +!) developed in straight Acufine in a rotary JOBO Multitank. I'm going to retest using fresh 4x5 TMAX400. 1/125 @ F11 Sinar Handy hand held 65mm F8 Super Angulon.

I think that the plus-x is 1999 vintage, but I’ve had great results shooting normally at box speed. No idea what the zones actually were, but it was definitely a high contrast kind of day. Perhaps that’s a good reason to just go with stand to control the contrast.

I’ve got a box of 320 tri-x that I’m using up, but I’ll definitely check out tmax 400 next time!
