D76 - Brown In Envelope - Gone Bad?

Hey guys.

Just mixed up my first batch of D76 and the powder was the color of hot cocoa. Attaching a video (with a messed up iPhone camera so it's a little blurry but you'll get the picture).

Has this gone bad? Should I toss it?

It depends on how important your film is to you.

D-76/ID-11 is not hard to find or expensive, so personally i'd toss it and buy a new pack......at least that way you can more or less guarantee a result.

Hmmmmm! it doesn't look to healthy does it? One of the two parts (I forget which), is a dark cream colour anyway but it should mix with the other part to give a colourless liquid. Kodak D76 or Ilford ID11 are more or less the same and both have incredibly long shelf life when mixed.

There will be other replies to this but I suspect the answers will be more or less the same.

If you're at all doubtful .perhaps best to spend few pence on a fresh supply, rather than risk your pictures or waste the film. OTOH, you don't say how old the present batch was, or storage conditions, and you could always do a rough test be dropping a scrap of fully-fogged film into the solution and note whether it develops to a full black within the normal processing time.

You should contact Kodak Alaris, tell them you've got one of their bad batches of D76, and get them to replace it.

I emailed Kodak, they're going to send me a replacement. In the meantime, I ordered from another seller - in Florida, this time (vs California) - and got the same batch number and same production date again.

The powder in this envelope is more off-white or yellowish - is it pure white or is that normal? It's not brown like the last one but not sure if it's safe to use any chems from this batch? What do you think?

The good D76 should be white.

The post after mine suggested the dark colored version might still be usable. I haven't tried.

I think the only safe way to have a working bag of d76 is to have it replaced directly by Kodak Alaris.

That's nothing. My Dektol looks like espresso. Maybe more like tea when it's diluted in the tray. Kodak says it's ugly but fine, and the prints look good. But I'd ask for a replacement on the D76.

Just discovered I have two bags of the bad batch. Cat105 8270. I’ve had d76 mixed and bottled in my house non stop for the past seven or so years and this is the first time I’ve seen it. Mixed up like really dark tea. I’ve probably had these two bags in a drawer for at least two years. I tossed it and I’m mixing a new gallon from a different batch.

Good luck on your replacement. It's been well over a year and I'm still waiting, and this is after getting emails saying they would replace it. The silver lining is that I don't buy anything new from Kodak anymore, and discovered the Foma 100 and 400 films. They give me great image quality at almost half the price of Tri-X. If I do buy D76 (I've essentially replaced it w/ Clayton F76 Plus), I buy the old packages and tins on fleabay and etsy. Never had any issues w/ those.

I bought a lot of old paper bag d76 on eBay, maybe 10 bags probably 3 years ago. Really old packages that looked ancient and they have all been fine. Now two modern plastic bag batches are both bad. As for a refund I won’t bother, way less effort for me to just move on….

If you mix your own, I encourage you to select a variant of D-76 with improved buffering to avoid the infamous activity-boost of the original D-76. Throw that old D-76 away and make your own from scratch. Its cheap and reliable. I abandoned all Kodak chemistry 2 years ago and have never looked back.
