If I find myself there this summer, how might I best take advantage of the opportunity?

Well, my guess would be to enjoy the experience - and the food and wine

Seriously, if you're referring to photo-ops, you should provide more info. What are you looking for? Landscape shots? Traditional Mediterranean architecture?
Places worth visiting, just as a tourist?

How long will you be staying?

There are many places worth seeing - from Dubrovnik all the way to Pula on the Istria peninsula - but it would take at least a week...

Your method of transport? Rented car, bus?

My suggestion is to visit Dubrovnik and at least one or two islands... Hvar and Mljet come to mind. Islands are definitely places to see.

If you have the time, a rented car and travelling at your own pace would be ideal. Ferries are plentiful and all the islands are well connected.

You should provide more info as to what are you looking for. I can promise the food and the wine should be excellent - and so are the views. The sea is absolutely wonderful (and clean!).

Let me know if I can help (I spend every summer on the island of Hvar, BTW....)

Below is a little teaser - small harbor of the town of Hvar.

Thank you Denis.

If this trip comes together I'll be there with a small family group in late July, early August, for most of a 10 day trip which includes two travel days and may include from 1-3 days in London. So say, roughly 6 days based in Dubrovnik.

I tend not to care about the beaten tourist path. Islands sound good to me. Wine and food sounds good to me. How's the beer there?

I'm sure we'll have a car.

Photographically...I'll probably bring the Holga and the Bronica and tend towards street photography. I'll let Dad shoot the "sites" with his d****** for holiday snaps.

If you're based in Dubrovnik, visit Lokrum (small island near Dubrovnik), there's a nice botanical garden there... Just a quick excursion from Dubrovnik.
Then island Korcula and a visit to Split, to see the Diocletian's palace. And the girls  The girls (and women in general) in Split are a sight to behold - with no disrespect for the women meant, quite the contrary

I grew up in Split, so I should know

From Split you have good ferry connections to island Hvar. Hvar is quite a place to visit - do also visit Starigrad on the island of Hvar while you're there - Petar Hektorovic's Rennaisance villa is nice - see here, for example.

And I'm quite sure you won't be disappointed and food and wine

The beer is OK - we have most popular brands (Heineken, Beck's, Corona, you name it), so you'll survive. But I still recommend the wine. People who lived in these parts for almost three thousand years preferred the wine - must be some very good reason for that

BTW, let me know if this trip materializes, we could probably meet - I'll probably be on the island of Hvar. It would be nice to meet another LF-er!

That would be nice. Thanks for the information. I hope the trip materializes. Don't be too disappointed if I don't bring the LF all the way from Kansas.

try to get into hotel close to old town. Dubrovnik is a historical city full of beautiful things: architecture, architectural details, beaches, towers, streets as in old "Dubrovnik & Venice Time", marina, people (try to contact and talk to some residents fisherman), cave museum, try to rent a car for a day and go northbound toward Split, and watch what you are passing. just anywhere within the old town. You will never forget that city once see it. New part of the city is nothing special.
have a nice trip to Paradise

I am going to Croatia this fall, primarily to the southern coast. In terms of what to shoot, there are many good guide / travel books that describe these areas well enough so that one can get a sense of what one might find interesting to one's own self. While all of Croatia seemed interesting, I choose the focus primarily on the southern coast and islands in order to have a bit more relaxed and in depth experience, (time to taste ALL the wines). I am basing ourselves in Split to begin with for a few days, then bus down to Dubrovnick, basing there a few days also. I will island hop via ferry back up to Split staying one or two days on three or four of the islands that are not an easy day trip out of either Split or Dubrovnick. I generally use guides with vehicles to drive to places that are a bit farther a field if the public transportation does not give me the flexibility we need, (such as Montenegro from Dubrovnick or Plitvice Lakes from Split).

Thanks for the tips guys. I was away when the last two posts were made...sorry...I didn't see them until just now.
