Highly respected photographic scientist, author, inventor and journalist Geoffrey Crawley has died, Amateur Photographer is sad to report.


He will be remembered in photographic circles as the inventor of Acutol, a fine grain black and white darkroom developer, made by Paterson and reviewed in Amateur Photographer's issue dated 30 October 1963.

Geoffrey, who was 83, had been suffering from a long illness.

The funeral is set to take place in Southend-on-Sea, Essex on 10 November.

Geoffrey Crawley had a long career starting with his famous 1960-61 papers on developers mentioned in the Film Developing Cookbook.He was Technical Editor (later Editor?) of the British Journal of Photography for over 20 years,more recently writing for Amateur Photographer magazine.He owned or had the use of a microdensitometer which made his reviews of B/W films world class.He designed the Paterson range of developers and the homebrew FX-37 tabular grain film developer.
Probably fair to say that with his encyclopaedic knowledge of films and developers no UK writer could replace him.Will be missed.

His most famous B&W film developer was Acutol, although he also designed another acutance developer for Paterson called Acuspecial.
I believe he wrote an article about acutance and image sharpness for the BJP around 1961. I was wondering if anyone has a copy?

Acutol-S FX-15 was the second major acutance developer Crawley formulated for Paterson however it gave grainy results with 35mm films and Acuspecial was brought in later which was half way between Acutol and Acutol-S.

Apart from the 8 article series of 1960/61 Crawley also wrote an abridged version which was published in the following year's BJP Almanac, and subsequent Almanacs, the formulae were still included in the later BJP Annuals almost until the last editions. Crawley clarified a few points in the abridged article.

Ironically, I learned of his passing while at George Eastman House in Rochester, NY the next day. A lot of his work is present in the library there.

His contributions to silver photography will endure for a long time.

Crawley's obituary from today's Guardian. Like the Telegraph, going with the fairies story, but probably more relevant to us is:

Over the next few years Geoffrey gave piano lessons and honed his skills at inventing black-and-white film developers for Paterson. Three of Geoffrey's concoctions, Aculux, Acugrade and FX-39, are still made today.
