COT 320 discontinued

Maybe this is old news, but

According to Bostick & Sullivan, the COT-320 is discontinued and limited to stock on hand. I know this is a favorite of many pt & pd printers.

This has been discussed quite a few times lately, one day it's been discontinued the next day it's not. Maybe I should auction what I have left.

That's too bad if this really is the end.

FWIW, I recently saw some very nice 16x20 inch sized pure palladium prints made on Canson vellum. The original images were shot on 8x10.

Loosing another paper is disheartening but the price of Cot320 had risen so steeply that I already decided to quit using it.

I knew that it had been tough to get and that B&S had been out of stock for quite a while. I have most of an 11x14 package I bought a couple years ago and saving for pd prints. If I ever get back to them.

I would agree, the price was/is just too much.

The price wasn't that high here in Europe (2x the price of Fabriano Artistico - which is fair for a such good product) and I'm terribly sad to hear (confirm) that "news". (Not to me; I had already shared a French reseller's statement here "that it will - maybe - not be available again", a little while ago...)

Apparently, Bergger isn't using (or won't be using anymore) this paper as the base of their other fine (inkjet and s/g) products. If they were, they wouldn't quit providing it in a - relatively - unprocessed state, for a premium price...

Now that makes me think (and worry) about the future of Bergger too...

Try Arches Platine from Bostick & Sullivan. When platinotype was discontinued I tried COT320 but was never quite pleased. They started carrying platine a while back and I find it to be more pleasing as I feel the natural white works better with the warm tones of my pt/pd emulsion. It coats nicely as well.

Hmmm... the fine print says "by Bostick and Sullivan". It still seems to be available from Bergger here:

Oh, yes Kerik, you're right - I hope! The "fine print" issue... I didn't pay attention to it when I first visited the link.

This could mean: From now on, Bergger decided to sell the paper themselves. I wonder when they're going to set-up an on-line shop for European customers - in no way I will order from the U.S. site both because of extra shipment overhead and inflated prices! (Still, their prices are considerably better than what was asked from B&S, before...) Maybe I should ask to Lotus View Camera (Austria) if they are still able to order it from Bergger, to make sure... (BTW, the "French" reseller - that I was using before - doesn't stock it anymore...)

Actually, the prices from the Bergger website and from B&S are exactly the same.

It's so "now", it wasn't so "before" (as I noted in my previous post)... For instance, I remember they were quoting USD 289 (or something like that - I think price per sheet was something like USD 12...) for 25 sheets of 22x30" paper some time ago.

I really don't mean to be argumentative, but "before" is a relative term, and fairly meaningless without a point of reference.

My last purchase of COT320 from B&S was in July and August of 2009. The prices were $53.50 for 11x14(25), $110 for 16x20(25), and $219 for 22x30(25).

The defense rests.

Ok, then something changed between August 2009 and August 2010 (the last time when I checked B&S prices...), and then between August 2010 and October 2010...

In any case, the prices were high compared to what I could fetch here in Istanbul. (A hardship area - when it comes to art supplies...) (As I said before, usually not more than 2x the price of Fabriano Artistico - to give you a reference for comparison.)

Anyway, my only wish is that they continue to manufacture and distribute / sell it w/o surcharge - because I'm not willing at all to pay more than I was already paying before, even if I like the product very much!

I don't think any paper is worth around $9 a sheet unless you have a healthy clientele and your work is so well known and it's an indelible signature of your work.

It's a pain to test new materials, but there has to be some limit, don'tcha think?

I received confirmation from John Horowy at Bergger USA that the paper has not been discontinued and is available for purchase on their website. Whether or not it's worth the price is entirely a personal choice. I'm glad it's still available for those who want to use it and find the B&S announcement a bit misleading (as demonstrated by this thread).
