I'm considering using corner mounts rather than tissue hinges for mounting/matting my father's silver gelatin prints. The prints are in a range of sizes (8x10, 11x14, 16x20). I notice that Archival Method's corner mounts come in a range of sizes: 10mm, 19mm, 32mm, and 75mm.

  1. Is there a rule of thumb for choosing a mount size to secure a given size print?
  2. Is there practical print size limit when using corner mounts (e.g., are mounting strips better for larger prints)?

I've corner mounted some 16x20 prints years ago with an over mat and it's fine. I used the paper ones from Light Impress that I had to fold then held down with linen tape. For prints without over mats, I bought tiny transparent ones and I have a feeling that they might fall of because they're just have peel off backing on them. So far so good.

Loooking in an old catalog, Light Impressions says 3/8" corners are for prints up to 8"x10", and 7/8" corners are for prints up to 16"x20"

Thanks everyone for the tips and links.

And d'oh! I just realized I had an old Archival Methods catalog with the info I was looking for:
19mm for up to 8x10
32mm (1 1/4") for up to 11x14
75mm (3") for up to 20x24

I think most of the prints have sufficient white borders so the over mat will hide the corners, but I'll probably get the cutout full view, if only because they look like they might be easier to insert the photo.
