Copal sizes in mm?

All of the lens boards I've been working on are finished except for drilling the copal sized holes. I found sizes for copals 0, 1 and 3 but not 2. I thought there might not be a size 2 but a couple of people have requested that size so maybe it does exist and I just can't find it.

Here's what I have in mm: Copal 0=34.7mm Copal 1=41.8mm Copal 3=65mm

I don't want to start drilling until I had the official APUG stamp of approval

I hunted around a lot and couldn't find anything on the Copal #2. There are, however, a number of posts on rec.photo.* stating that the copal #2 doesn't exist!

By the way, Alan, I know I asked for one board that had a rather large hole. If there are any others, and the part you cut for the hole can be salvaged, can you include those? I am thinking if the hole-piece is large enough to make a mini-speed graphic board, I might give that a try.

I based my copal sizes off the Grimes site and it's actually the first place I looked. I'm mainly trying to figure out the elusive copal 2. I'll pm the people who wanted that and see if they had any info.

Look on SK Grimes' site, but instead of looking for a Copal #2, look for a Compur #2 ! That should give you a rough idea, but according to Grimes there wasn't really a standardized size for #2, but rather several different sizes that are larger than 1 but smaller than 3 that he calls #2. It might be best to request specific sizes from folks wanting #2 cutouts.

The best bit I've found for a copal 0 is a cabinet maker's "european" hinge drill bit. It has carbide spurs (that jingle - jangle - jingle, as it goes cutting merrily along.... oops, sorry, not enough coffee yet) and a brad point to make a clean hole. They are used for drilling the moritse in the back side of a door anf fit perfectly. Best to use a drill press for this operation. tim

There is no Copal #2, but there are some odd sizes that nave been called #2.

However there was a Compur #2, as well as several odd sizes which have been confused with Compur #2. The sizes given on the SK Grimes site is, unfortunately, not the correct one.

My 1962 Compur manual lists 3 different #2's - Compur 2-X Tube 5/I, Tube 5/II and Tube 6/II. The two "5"s share a 50mm x 29 1/13 tpi mounting thread, while the "6" is 55.8mm x 20 1/13 tpi.

Both the lenses I have that are in #2 shutters are in 2-X Tube 5/II. This includes 165mm f:6.8 Angulon and 240mm f:5. Symmar. My 180mm f:4.5 Xenar is in an older shutter with slightly different threads - but if it were some years newer it would have been in a 2-X 6/II.

Years ago before my 4x5 Toyo monorail kit was stolen (sigh!) all my lenses were on smallish 4x4 Graphic lens boards.

The one Toyo lensboard had a Graphic adapter with 2 swing-arms to hold the lenses in place. (See attached photo, if I've done it correctly.)

The big advantage to this is in storage or transport all the lenses were not on the big Toyo lens board. Also the cost per lens was much less.
