I just got a new copal 1 shutter today and when I opened it, the shutter was there and there was a black plastic ring loose inside. What is this black plastic ring for?

Does the black plastic ring have threads on it? If so, then it is the retaining ring for mounting on the lens board, or it could be a spacer ring as well.

Diane,
The retainer ring should be metal and screwed to the back threads of the shutter. The black plastic ring is generally a spacer, (filler) to fit the shutter more firmly to thinner lens boards.

Hope this helps. I'm looking for my new Copal 1 from MPEX to buddy up with my new 240, just like yours! Cool lens, eh!

Cheers,
Geary

The spacer is also used to keep the aperture lever that runs behind the shutter body from binding when the shutter is mounted to a board.

This is my first new shutter only purchase. As for the lens, I think it's waiting for me at the post office - I have yet to see it.
