Contrast Index of Paintings or Engravings to match Pictorialist Photography

Is there such a thing like painting contrast index and is there a way to determine from internet museum reference image ? Or would it be too complex to cross from all of that electronic files ? Is there such a research paper or Have you ever been seen such a thing ?

Is there any pictorialist movement to manipulate the development time and temp. to match with original with film ?
