Contemporary Daguerreotype Lecture & Demonstration

This March Project Basho will be hosting a series of events dedicated to daguerreotypes, a mirror-like image and one of the first photographic processes made on silver plated copper.

March 13th, 7 pm - Lecture on Contemporary Daguerreotypes

March 15th, 11 am - Daguerreotype Demonstration

Both events are lead by Takashi Arai, an emerging Japanese photographer who primarily works daguerreotypes. For more information on Takashi Arai, please read his interview in Project Basho's Featured Photographer this month or visit his website.

Admission is $10 for the general public, and $5 for students and Project Basho Members. (Admission to first event will comp admission to the following event)

Thanks to Takashi for a very interesting lecture. It was nice to have the opportunity to see fresh (new) Becquerel and mercury-developed daguerrotypes for in-person viewing. They really are a beautiful 'object' unto themselves. I'm sorry I wasn't able to make it down to see the demonstration.

What's the difference in the appearance of the two? If they look the same, why would anyone bother with mercury fumes?

It was a fascinating demo, and everyone got to see the process up close. Takashi made a daguerreotype group portrait of all the attendees which he then proceeded to develop. Hopefully Project Basho will post a scan of it here.

Becquerel process requires a much longer exposure, the image isn't as sharp, and it is very contrasty compared with mercury development.

Yes- another big thanks to Tsuyoshi for bringing Takashi to Philadelphia to present the process! It was a terrific opportunity to view the process first-hand and to take part in making an image. Six minutes is forever when posing!

Daguerreotype Leacture and Workshop with Takashi Arai

Our demonstration on the daguerreotype process with Takashi Arai, held on March 15th, was very well received. We had a very good turn out with attendees from all over the United States. Takashi was pleased with the results and plans to return in the fall to conduct a daguerreotype workshop in conjunction with the 2009 Daguerreian Society Symposium. We will also be having a show of contemporary daguerreotype practitioners which will include the work of Takashi Arai.
