Contax N1 exposure mode lever won't budge

OK, it'll budge a tad. But it won't go to a different exposure mode. (and I am pushing down the shutter speed button concurrently). I'm afraid that if I try and force it, something will break (it just arrived in the mail from Japan, so I don't know how stiff it normally is. Has anyone else come across this problem?

I figured it out. The diagram in the manual (on page 25) points to the wrong button when explaining the "exposure mode lock release button".
