Hi,

I just got my Contax G2, but it seems to be unable to correctly identify the Infinity focus (either manual or auto) Whenever I am trying to focus on a distant object I either get *..* - unable to focus sign or the 5m focusing distance - but never the Inf sign..
Is this a common thing or is my item actually faulty ?

In my experience (I have four G1s), this happened one time. I learned it could be either a camera body or a lens problem.

Either way you will probably need to have the camera checked by a qualified and Contax-experienced repair person/shop.

My 'fix' was to the connecting pins between lens and body. My repair man told me he had to do quite a lot of fiddly pin-straightening and readjusting. It cost me A$160 in 2004.

Well worth it to me. The Contax Zeiss lenses are truly unique.

I learned to be ultra-careful when mounting/unmounting the lenses from the camera. I reckon, over the years this has saved me a small fortune.

You may want to contact Vic Plant in Altona (Melbourne) if he is still doing repair work. He fixed my G1 all those years ago and it has worked faultlessly since.

I no longer have contact with Vic as I now live out in the sticks in regional VIC, but he should be an easy Google or phone directory check.

Let us know how things work out with your G2. I've stayed with G1s as I have four (two I bought new in the '90s, he other two about ten years ago when they were being flogged off dirt-cheaply ex-Japan) and they just go on shooting and shooting. One G1 in my 'arsenal' developed a film rewind problem in 2006 - it wouldn't auto-rewind but after some fiddling around I discovered I could press the manual rewind button with a toothpick which then activated the rewinder - and I left it on a shelf for about a year, but it then fixed itself and has worked well since. These things happen.

Hi,

Would you mind sharing if you found a fix for this? I have the same problem.

Thanks

Long time G2 user here; don't know if this helps, but my 28mm lens did that one time. I was on a trip so I freaked out, but all I did was clean the contacts ( which looked fine) and it never occurred again.

Hi and thanks for the reply. I tried cleaning the conrtacts, but no joy. I had the problem on 2 different lenses, so I assume it is the camera. It has been sent off now anyway to Sendean Cameras in London, so I'll see what they say about it.

Was it eventually repaired? In the USA, Nippon Photo did a CLA on my black G2 and calibrated the focus; it was back focusing badly but works super well now. I’m glad technicians are still fixing these.
