Stitching was possible back then, it took a lot of planning and a lot of skill dodging and burning to get the joins lining up without looking crap.

here, about Oscar Rejlander (who may not have invented post-processing, but he was photoshop back when most others could barely use a crayon). He managed to combine allegedly over 30 negative to a single shot, and the only place it looks a little bit dodgy is on the left.
If you look really closely at the photo, you'll probably see the joins, but at a distance it might be unnoticable.
Or maybe it is just a single photo taken with a really wide angle, like a Hyperogon or something?
