colour infrared film

does anybody know where i can source some 120 colour infrared film? from what i can gather its rarer than unicorn tears!!

I've been experimenting with regular C-41 for IR, first test shows a small amount of success so far (see my gallery).

Although ISO 400 film has been reduced to EI 0.017 though and still needs more exposure.


Ektachrome Infrared in 120 can be found on ebay still I think, its quite expensive per roll, as its cut down by hand by someone iirc.

By the guy that Steve mentioned, Dean Benici. The problem is that he uses KODAK AEROCHROME III Infrared Film 1443, which was recently discontinued.

I got an email from Dean last week, he's secured some more Aerochrome which is fresh (exp: 2011), he thinks he'll get 400 rolls out of it.

It's slide film so it needs the E6 process. You can cross process it if you want.

Short answear, if you can process C-41 at home you can process E-6. Most important is the temperature (Jobo is good but not a must).

For C-41 development one should modify the C-41 processing (opinions on the degree of variation differ...)


We should not forget that people here are using such film typically for a "crazy effect", thus something as standard development is questionable anyway.
It would be different when one employs that film scientifically or for surveying. Then the development should yield results similar to the ones done in standard processing.

In this case E-6 is NOT the standard process either.

Get it while you can from Dean. It's like $24 a roll, but it's well worth it, especially compared to the ridiculous price of EIR on eBay in 35mm.

Go to his website, check out his and other's flickr pictures with the stuff... it's great and it's soon to be extinct!

Yellow is also good. In the past I had some success with a Cokin sepia filter.

I have one roll of real EIR, and one of HIE in my fridge.

I just cant find anything to use them on.. it'd be a shame to waste them.


iirc it's AR-5 process (The EIR). I'll have to check the box again. But it states AR-5 or E-6.

I had inquired with Dean about a typo in the price on his website (It said $4.50 a roll, I was gonna buy a bunch! It was supposed to be $24.50) and so I was on his mailing list when he sent out a mail earlier this week warning that he only has 70 rolls left unspoken for from this batch. I just ordered 8. He said the earliest he would be doing another batch (if ever) is next March.

I hate to say it, but I wonder how much this stuff will go for in say, 5 years. I don't plan to hoard mine for a profit, but you know that someone out there is doing it. And for the prices of 35mm stuff... well jeez, let's just say those folks could save money by buying an MF camera.

Anyone could buy a single roll from a designated Kodak dealer. Then it was up to him to convert it and get permission from Kodak to retail it.

not a good idea to use a high street c41 lab for this stuff
infrared pickup machine sensors fog a lovely line down the middle

the best results are e6..
if you do not do it yourself give it too a pro lab dip with a dip dunk machine.
tell them at least 3 times what it is...no infrared googles or camera lights to be used.
1443 aerochrome can look fantastic in standard e6 process.

I think he still has some, though he's looking to close it out pretty much now, so hurry!

I'm getting some of his 8x10 sheets from this order, which I'll cut down to 4x5. Of course I'll test with the 120 first to make sure I know what I've got a handle on it before committing those expensive sheets to the process!
