Has anyone used the colorsplash flash? I have a hotshoe on my camera and I was told I could just buy the flash to get that effect rather than buying the colorsplash camera.

Or..is there any way to get a similar effect without spending $30 on this flash?

Coloured gels over a normal flash. Cheaper than a coloursplash flash.

Go to any good photo or theatrical supply store and pick up a sample book of gels and use it with any flash.

Thanks!

Oh?

Take a Kodak Wratten gel. Put it in a bowl of water. Watch it be very gel-like before it disolves.

Although most of the "gels" that go between a light and the subject matter these days are plastic.

I would strongly suggest you pick up a bunch of gel-maunfacturer sample packs. Bogen, Lee, Tiffen, they've all made them & they should be available in a good camera shop. Basically you get a big swatch book of a huge range of colors. Just rip out the ones you want to use and tape them over your flash head. Not only do you get a wider range of colors available, but you also can manipulate the power settings on your flash...something you definitely cannot do with the Colorsplash. And to top it all off, these swatchbooks are free. I've been using these things for nearly ten years now and they're fantastic.

Thanks I'll try that!
