Cokin P holder

Hi all - over the Xmas period I had more time so I watched some Youtube videos re: landscape filters by Lee. Yeah .. my pictures do look too average and I should use my filters that I own now a bit more often.

I read on B&H and it says it takes 3 square filters and a crinkle cult round filter so 4 filters together. Is this true?

You can also get slim-line holders that just take two filters. The standard holder will take four filters, and if you need to use more, an adaptor can be used to stack additional holders. Most of the time, you'd generally only need to use one filter, sometimes two. It would be very rare that you'd want to use all four slots or stack a second holder.

Also, think carefully about what lenses you're going to use, both now and potentially in the future, as to what size filters you'd want.
I've personally got Cokin A and Cokin Z.
A fits up to 58mm or even 62mm-threaded lenses, ie a whole lot of my older and slower 135 SLR gear, and some of my smaller LF lenses. They're also cheap as piss, you can get almost any of them for $3 each.
P doesn't really fit with what I've got, only my longer 135 SLR gear and standard-normals on MF (neither of which I'd normally use filters on).
My wider (landscape) MF lenses have up to 86mm threads, as do my bigger LF lenses (90/5.6 SWD). For them it's the Cokin Z, 100mm wide filters, also compatible with the Lee 100mm filters so you can mix-n-match.

I'm almost regretting not springing for the 150mm Cokin X because the centre filter for my SWD has 105mm front threads, so I can't use ND Grads and centre-filter at the same time. But I can easily justify going for only 100mm when I see the price of the 150mm wide filters.

I have 2 holders. P wide angle that takes only one slot in square filter. The P standard version that takes 3 square filters, so I can attach a special polariser on the outside?

I have 77mm adaptor for it. I have step up rings with my other lenses (for my 35mm system at present).

For the 35mm system I thought about a GND filter, a CPOL and a standard (solid) ND for waterfalls ot smooth out the water.

FYI there are Chinese clone 'P' filter holders available via ebay for very low prices, usually with free shipping and multiple adapter rings included in the deal. Just FYI, not a recommendation as I haven't tried them and, understandably, you may not wish to support the cloners!

Whatever you do, keep the filters clean and scratch free as they flare terribly if scratched or dirty. Also, buy something to act as a hood. The plastic clip-on ones are ok and can be cut to shape if you need one for a wide angle

I have used those filters and holders, I must admit. For the penny crunchers, like myself, hey, they actually do rather well.

Out of curiosity I did a quick test with a digi camera to compare a sparlingly clean Cokin filter with a equally clean glass filter. When pointing an LED torch directly at the front of the lens extra flare was evident with both filter types, compared to the bare lens. What surprised me was that the Cokin did so well compared to glass, although it was slightly worse. However, when I tried a slightly scratch one, what a disaster! Now I treat Cokin filters as I would gels.

Which slimline filters fits in the Cokin holders?

I watched this video .. the Singh Ray P Sprocket filter looks like it takes up the first thin slot and the first larger square slot.

As I am looking at going with larger formats. It seems like the Cokin P with the wide angle holder vignettes at 18mm but clears at 20mm - only allows 1 filter at most case. The standard holder doesn't clear until 24mm - for 35mm SLR.

Are larger formats an issue with vignetting since the focal lengths are longer? I mean at the extreme a Pentax 67 with a 40mm is that an issue?

I am just reading about the 100mm filters now. But it seems like at the 35mm system 16mm FL it can only use the Lee wide angle holder with 2 slots and one cannot use the 105mm CPOL filter. Then the only alternative is to have the CPOL on inner slot using a Singh Ray / Cokin brand Z size drop in Sprocket.
