I was just reading in the newsgroups about a coffee based developer.
Whats the scoop on this? Is there a specific recipe?

there's been an extensive thread going in the B&W photo.net forums. Based on my results, others are getting startling results!

Check out the "B&W film and processing forum" at photo.net. There have been a few threads there. Search for "caffenol" which is the ersatz name the forum has adopted. "Caffenol plus" is caffenol with a little salt. I've posted an Efke PL100 in a shot of caffenol.

I've had a few prints done by Starbucks and they seem to do a pretty good job, although they are kind of expensive and there is always a line.

I tried a couple of landscapes but didn't like the frenzied look probably due to the caffeine. I'd suggest you only use it for action shots.

However if you have a print that just lays there and needs more energy this could be the right developer.

The down side is when you try to drymount them afterwards the little buggers won't sit still on the mattboard. You need to let them sit for a few hours before you even attempt it.

That's my experience anyways, you're mileage may vary.

I would take my stuff to Starbucks but ya know, I just can't handle the Italian.
