Clayton F76+ Developer

I will be trying out some Clayton F76+ film developer soon and wish to hear what others think of it.

What characteristics should I expect and what other developers is it similar to?

Peter, F76 Plus Film Developer is described by Clayton Chemicals as “a long lasting phenidone based developer.”

Hi Peter,

I use Clayton F76+, mainly with Fuji Acros. I guess I would classify it as a good all around developer. The acutance is normal, not too edgy not too soft. The tonality is nice and depending on the dilution I use I can get good N+ and N- control. I've only tested it in 4x5 BTZS tubes, so my times and dilutions would probably not do much for you. But if it's readily available to you and economical then go ahead and give it a try.

I use F76+. I was trying it for it's reported "lower toxicity" and "longer lasting" properties.

I have to say, it has lasted long for me. I got good results out of stuff that was pushing a year old. I didn't have as much luck with D76.

Probably not, as D 76 is a metol/hydroquinone mix, and this seems to be phenidone (& probably hydroquinone) developer...

It contains Phenidone, so it may be a Phenidone version of D76. It is hard to be certain and Clayton's description doesn't tell me.

By the way, Clayton's statement about F76+ "Lower Toxicity" raises the question - Lower toxicity than what?

thanks, in the past I have had my students use (instead of powder mixing D 76) Lauder Chemical formula 76 -sodium sulfite, hydroqinone(123-31-9), p-methylaminiphenol sulfate (55-55-0), and sodium Tetraborate (1302-96-4)..... seems like D 76

I thought I raed somewhere that F76plus is very, very similar to Ilford DD-X.

The results were similar to DDX with D3200, EFKE and other films IMHO.
IIRC it is a phenidone based developer and David Wood (dr5 ) told me he used this as his standard developer

If there was a dealer here I'll probably buy it, but since there is not, I'll stick to DDX
