Classic D-76 formula : is there a way to improve it?

If one were not interested in replenishment, and using D-76 1+1 one shot, is there any benefit in using a formula any more complicated than D-76h which contains only metol, sodium sulphite and a little borax?

Ooops, I didn't realize the distinction between D-76h (with hydroquinone and boric acid) and the simpler D-76H (without those two ingredients).

There isn't a D76H because it's not a Kodak formula just an unfortunate misnaming by the junior co-author of a book.

Still the name, for better or worse, has entered the photographic vocabulary. I would see words like normalcy banned from American speech. The correct word is normality Never been fond of Calvin Coolidge anyway. But its not going to happen.

Geoffrey Crawley made several attempts to improve on D-76/ID-11 in one way or another with some of his FX series of developers. Look up FX3, FX4, FX7, FX11, FX15 and FX18.
D-76 is a difficult developer to beat.

And I'm guessing Kodak invested a good deal of time and effort in developing it. [pun intended]

Or any number of clones from various companies. It was the early equivalent of Open source because cine film processing needed consistency worldwide.

I just tried to lower the amount of SS to 85 g. per liter and the results have been interesting. I got a coarser grain but my negs had a sparkle that I found exciting.

Next stop : 81 grams!
