I'm not 100% positive, but I think that "CJ Chemical" is the eBay name for Artcraft, which is one of a handful of the bigger hobbyist-oriented photochemical suppliers in the US. I once bought from an eBay seller -- I think it was CJ Chemical -- and it arrived in a box with an Artcraft return address label. Certainly both CJ Chemical and Artcraft are in the same city (Altamont, NY). I've bought from Artcraft at least twice and CJ (if my memory is correct) once with no complaints from either source. (FWIW, the time I bought from CJ it was because it's a little easier to pay via PayPal when buying from that name. Artcraft will take PayPal, but you've got to e-mail them; there's no Web-accessible way to do so -- or there wasn't when I placed my order with CJ. With CJ via eBay, PayPal payment is a little simpler.)

If CJ is Artcraft, you are in good hands

I don't usually oder from Artcraft, but I have once.

I bought a pound of CD-3 for my home brew RA-4 colour prints work.

The package arrived promptly, with a note that the stuff they had on hand appeared a bit oxidized to them, and that they had fresher stock on order.

About 3 weeks later a second package of 'fresh' CD-3 arrived. I was only billed for one pound, and shipping once.

That makes Mike from Artcraft a stand up guy in my book. I wish I had the chance to do business with the late Mr. Katz of Tri ESS; for I understand he was of the same sort of business man.

FWIW, I once ordered a gallon of ammonium thiosulfate, among other items, from Artcraft. When the package arrived, I opened it and the first thing I found amidst the packing "peanuts" was a 1-liter bottle of ammonium thiosulfate. I was a bit peeved -- until I dug out the other items and found three more 1-liter bottles of ammonium thiosulfate. There wasn't a note, and I didn't ask, but I presume they were out of 1-gallon bottles and so substituted four 1-liter bottles, which works out to slightly more (1 gallon = 3.785 liters), so this certainly fits in the same category as your anecdote, albeit to a lesser degree.

Hello all,

I have not ordered from Artcraft nor CJ, but if CJ is really their Ebay shop, I am a bit surprised at their terrible feedback. Also, the two items they purchased recently seem a bit odd. The negative feedback they have received has not all come from deadbeats and nutters - always a possibility. On the other hand, they don't appear to leave retaliatory negatives.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Clarence

Clarence,

I ordered a whack of chemicals for wet plate collodion from cjchemical, the customs declaration form was signed off as Mike Jacobson, Artcraft. Over on large format someone said it was his son who runs the ebay store.

You are so right on both accounts! Mike has always bent over backwards to meet my needs and secure the sale.

I loved Tri-Ess, both when I mail ordered in CO and later when I patronized them in person when I lived in LA. Their chemical selection was huge, the prices low. And lots of lab hardware. Mr. Katz died a couple of years ago and that was that.

Artcraft is the source for two sizes of still water print washer
kits. They supply all that is needed to convert two standard
size aquariums into slotted washers. The larger will handle
22 8x10s or 10 11x14s. A ten gallon aquarium needed.

They claim ONE 21/2 to 3 hour soak will yield archival results.
Better by some measure the water mileage any running water
washer can claim. And the still water advantage of no eddies
or other causes of uneven washing. Needn't be plumbed.

Tri ESS. Do miss them. I'd have thought they would be
a buy out opportunity. Dan
