It's a toss up. I went when I lived in IL, but the number and quality of vendors varied widely. The general rule was too many vendors crammed in too small a room. If your looking for something specific ....?

They sometimes have one in Downers Grove for the south side folks. I think it's a better swap meet.

Joe

Depends if you are just browsing, sometimes something interesting shows up. If you are looking for something specific, I have found better condition for less cost at KEH. These shows are waning - MF and LF very sparse. Fewer vendors and fewer attendies than 5 years ago. Most of the darkroom vendors have quit the business. Sad.

Bob

Bob is right about the darkroom vendors. There used to be a couple of darkroom guys where you could get stuff really cheap but I guess there's no interest any more to make the trip profitable. It also depends if the seller has made his gas money yet. They'll give away some stuff just to recoup the travel and the price of their table.

Prices are really low on oddball stuff. mainstream cameras can be pricey. You can always offer 'em a lowball amount and see how it goes. I'll probably go.

John

They always show in Milwaukee the day before Chicago and It was always a fun little show. The last two years were almost empty of product and the guys who were there say they can do better on eBay..Evan Clarke

Photorama used to have these every month. Same vendors, same bargain hunters. The shows and the number of customers dwindled and now the shows are less frequent so I tend to go every two or three months just for giggles. Every once in a while I find something worth carting home, but not often.

Just an update on the show this past weekend: Probably better than usual but absolutely zero darkroom stuff. Two 8x10 deardorfs with different kinds of backs for odd formats - in really good shape. ( Maybe they were backs for 11x14)

Lots of generic 35mm stuff. some medium format. Fair amount of LF lenses in shutters. Some really big old brass LF barrel lenses. Some studio lighting stuff.

But it was pretty small. Big difference from even 3 years ago.

Might have to pencil this in, never been to a camera show, thanks for the heads-up

Fortunately, Photorama shows re-appeared in the Chicago area.

I last visited a camera show in the 1990s before internet sales.

Unlike the larger shows of the 1990s, only one small room with vendors.

In person examination is convenient, though buyer beware is as important as it was thirty years ago.

Visiting is still useful as shipping costs will elevate cost to more than some items are worth when buying online.
