And since I'm mentioning it, this isn't my absolute favorite film, but when I tried it I thought it was nice. And I can't get Portra 400 (my favorite) at any price. WHen it comes back in stock it'll be $15 a roll.

at 3:1 price ratio, the Fuji suddenly seems even better. Call it nice plus.

As I scan my film I don't see much difference, if at all, between this and Portra 400. Everything can be tweaked.
At just over $5/roll this was a screaming deal. I ordered 30 rolls. I could have ordered more but wanted some of you to get a crack at it too.

I only shot one roll to test, and one roll just of walkin' around shots. I've shot lots of Portra 400, so I know it pretty well, which is a big part of why it's my favorite. I do have more rolls of the Fuji in the freezer (not including what I just bought) but I just haven't been shooting much color this year so I never really dug into it.

I do see a difference, especially lab scanned. I pretty much dislike about half of what the Noritsu shits out no matter what, so part of that might be its default settings.

Even when I scanned it myself it seemed the Fuji negatives were a touch less saturated and I think the portra handles overexposure a little better... but it is really small differences in palette and curves. That's all. Nothing that can't be touched up in NLP and Lightroom.

The fuji colors are actually quite pleasing in their own right. They touch my nostalgia nerve as I shot way more Fuji than Kodak in the 90s and this is both way better than what I used then yet still has a touch of the family resemblance.

Anyway, the test roll was in the ballpark with the Portra. And 95% of portra for 35% the cost seems like it fills my 400 speed needs nicely.

Just noticed my local Walmart has Fuji Superia X-Tra 400 in stock. $18.50 for three 36 exposure rolls. Also a price drop from $25.00. Maybe I'l pick up a few rolls.

Just got notification from UPS.

So I made it in under the wire and my film's on the way.

And Wal Mart was $28 last I looked. $18.50 for a three pack is way better. Glad to see a film cheaper than the last time I looked, seems it always goes the other way anymore.

Portra is very nice, no doubt. And if it was the same price as Fuji, or maybe a buk or so more, then ok. But at triple the price? Nope.

There will be good reasons, no doubt why none of this wild price range is anyone's fault. Each seller no doubt is asking a price that simply reflects changes over which it has no control

Wow. I checked Midwest Photo as soon as I saw Huss’s note, sold out. Then I thought I would see what else I could find out on the ‘net- kind of shocking. I made some good buys over the years with overstocks and close outs, no more. The one deal out there was Walmart, ($20 3 packs) but you can’t put it in the shopping cart. Freestyle says Nov 11 to restock 200 and 400, but who knows what the price will be? I’ll just have to get used to much higher film costs in the future.

Or is it from the mystery source, Made in USA?
Or that was just the 200 speed film...

Good to know. I've purchased 3x Japan boxes of 200, but I have seen 3x boxes of 200 labeled made in USA. Hopefully it was just a tempory virus disruption related issue. Duopolies aren't great, but monopolies are worse. And a duopoly is what we essentially have in the color marketplace.

I have a few boxes of 200 I got at Wal Mart about 6 months ago that are Made in USA. Expire 02 2024.

The Xtra 400 I just got is Made in Japan. Which I totally expect.

I don't mind Kodak Gold, and I got a good deal at the Wal Mart that I haven't seen since. Since Huss has found some, I'll have to keep an eye out for MiJ c200 to see if it reminds me of the Fuji 200 I used 30 years ago.

So, Fuji 200 is now again Japan produced film (C200), but Fuji still goes with Gold 200 spec sheet for Fuji 200.

Makes. Perfect. Sense.


Edit: Fuji 200 spec sheet now doesn't have the same characteristic and spectral sensitivity curves as Gold 200 anymore. Not the same as C200, either.

Bought some Fuji C200 135 3-pack from Rite Aid for about $10 per roll. Made in Japan. And even the cashier lady commented that film seems to be very expensive these days. I guess she was remembering $3.99 for a three pack...

In comparison, fresh Kodak Ektar 100 in 120 format seems cheap.
