OK, after the last try created a great deal of inattention, I had several folks write and say "You can fix those easy" and I did try -- I had two hurting A1s originally, and a busted AE1, and one of the A1's --Oh GLORY!!!! -- is now working just fine.
So I'm keeping that one.
HOWEVER -- the remaining A1 still don't go, the AE1 is beyond my abilities, and I'm throwing in a second AE1 body that is also kaput.
And, seriously, if nobody wants these I will turn them over to my grandchildren to take apart. I am not kidding. Knowing the 9-year-old, he'll fix them. You should see that kid assemble a Lego kit.
THE A1 -- Nice camera, sort of -- but after working it for a bit the mirror quit coming down unless I turned the power off. The shutter fires but the mirror locks up and that's that. I made the mistake of leaving it turned on with a battery in it overnight and in the morning the battery was dead. I took the bottom off and can't see anything obvious -- the magnet seems to be functioning right, the rest is a mystery. I DID see that someone else had already put some scotch tape over that little plastic case bit with some sort of switch in it. No clue what that's all about.
THE CLEANER AE1 -- this one seemed to work at first -- when I put a battery in it it did fire, but screeched. On the third firing it locked up. I took the bottom off, can't see anything obvious to move/shift/lube. Rather than get aggressive, I put the bottom back on and that's that. Very clean camera, little use, no dents. Lovely parts. Probably an easy fix if you know what you are doing.
THE DIRTIER AE1 -- This is the one that has some issues with its internal gearing -- it would fire the shutter and cycle the mirror before it was wound completely, even with no battery in it. Now it's not even doing that. Took the bottom off, didn't see anything I could fix, put the bottom back on.
SO: $60 for the three and that includes shipping AND I WILL DONATE THE ENTIRE $60 TO DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS TO HELP ITS WORK IN UKRAINE AND AROUND THE WORLD. I get nothing -- the shipping (within CONUS only) comes out of my pocket. If it will sweeten the deal, I'll even throw in the cool but worn hippie strap that is on the working A1.
So, my email/paypal is summicron12000@yahoo.com. If you live anywhere near Ogden, Utah, I'll hand them to you, you can hand me a check made out to Doctors Without Borders, I'll put it in an envelope and mail it and then we go out for beer. Deal?
