Not "perhaps" suspended, but definitely for the "time being".
And their argumentation does not let one expect this trade fair to be resumed ever.
yes, the wording does sound like "forever - but we want to leave a door open just in case"

So sad that I can't go to Köln in September every two years since 2004...
After visiting the show, I used to taste some cool Kölsch (beer) on a terrace near the cathedral...

I never ever made it over the Rhine downtown.... I always was so much exhausted from schlepping a bagpack and several bags full of data-sheets and catalogs a day long, that I was relieved to have reached my car or the train on the right bank of the river.

I must say that I took the car to drive over the Rhine and park in the parking under the Cathedral's place

It's difficult to see Photokina coming back in its old form, for the same reason numerous trade shows have bitten the dust in recent years. A declining market, the ability to access data online, brand "visionaries" on YouTube, gouging exhibition rates, the usual litany of culprits. If there is to be an exhibition, it would be better as the homespun pop-up variety where passionate individuals show their wares outside the corporate loop.

I hope it will come back... I published the first photos of the K-5 and years later of the K-1 taken at the Pentax booth...

There are fair providers in Hamburg planning an international fair/event that is supposed to take at least some of the business of late Photokina.
Leica who refrained even to book for the sheduled 2020 Photokina instead are enthusiastic on this new fair.

Well, in listings in their brochure:

"Capture"
....
"Film and video technology" (though this could be due to a wrong translation just mean "Movie and video technology")
.....

"Storage"
.....
"Film"
.....

Leica , Nikon and Olympus stated not to participate at next Photokina in May 2020.

Leica state to be pausing and to evaluate a possible attendance in 2021, but to strengthen their appearance at their own show-location in Wetzlar.
Nikon rejects the idea of an annually fair.
Olympus sees a lack of importance of such an event.

Zeiss after skipping one fair will be back in 2020.
Fuji are still contemplating.
didn'tcorona put an end to fairs in May of 2020?

No. See post #19.

But the concept of Photokina was already questionable. And the introduced changes were not fruitful in the eyes of the management and they now pulled the brake.
