I ve used the camera with a bag bellows and 72mm XL lens and it’s a good combination. But what about the 58mm? Will a recessed board be necessary? THanks

Info. says yes to a 58mm lens but no mention of a recessed lens board.

I have a 58XL for use on my Canham DLC. I have a bag bellows & recessed board.

If you are shooting 4x5 you can probably get away without the recessed board because you have barely enough coverage for the format, and therefore don’t need movements.

If you are shooting a Rollfilm back (my main use for this lens) you have lots of coverage for movements. A super compressed bellows - even a bag bellows, will benefit from less compression when tensioned through movements. I don’t know how rigid the Chamonix is, but I fear my Canham standards could ‘flex’ if I use movements with a bellows greatly compressed. I have also found the 58mm and indeed the 65 & 72mm lenses quite unforgiving of any asymmetry between the standards. I often shoot buildings & streetscapes and uneven subject softness due to asymmetry is very obvious.

I currently have the 72XL on a flat board but I intend to move it to a recessed board.

You should -- not because you can set the bellows at 52mm or because you don't have much image circle to work with -- all that is true. The main reason is because the flange focal length of the 58mm is 70mm!!! So you'll have plenty of movement -- even though you can't use it!!!

I use a 47mm XL on my TOKO (NOT TOYO) 4x5 Nikki II. I have to use a recessed board because the minimum bellows is 65mm and the FFL of the 47mm is 60mm.

So you're in luck.

Happy shooting
