Central Camera went up in flames amid George Floyd unrest. The Loop store’s owner isn’t angry, he’s recreating his ‘living museum.’
Central Camera is still rebuilding a year after a devastating fire during massive civil unrest surrounding the murder of George Floyd. The owner plans a full reopening for the 122-year-old Loop business.

(the full Chicago Tribune article is behind a paywall)
I don't live in Illinois any more so I don't subscribe to the Tribune any more.

On my version of Safari, running on a Mac Mini, the rectangle ad to sign in or subscribe pops up in the middle, but the article behind is still readable and will scroll up or down. I have not checked other web browsers.

I believe that kind of thing is called a "modal" these days. I'm not entirely sure. Typically if I run into one I can actually block the overlay using an extension called uBlock origin which I highly recommend.

Don't get me wrong - I believe in the survival of newspapers and don't object to their being paid for what they provide.
Where it becomes challenging is when you encounter situations like this - a link is provided, but those interested in the contents of the link being unable to access it, without making a longer term commitment.
Perhaps the story will be picked up by someone like AP, and then distributed through multiple venues, including ones I already subscribe to.

That's why I specified that there was a paywall, so there would be no surprise.
