Ringo Starr in "Hard Days Night" used and abused a Pentax Spotmatic. I seem to recall seeing a shot of Marilyn Monroe using a Rolleiflex.

Thanks to OP for the pics, always nice to see.

A lot of the Beatles were Rolleiflex types, maybe they got the idea from David Bailey's portraits of them. Truth be told, as it represented a huge part of what professional photography was from the thirties well into the sixties, you can just google lots of random 50's/60's star names together with the word 'Rolleiflex' and quite likely find an image of them shooting with one. Certainly Monroe, The Beatles, James Dean, Sammy Davis and a sprinkling of politicians like the Kennedys. As a keen owner myself, I always like that about them for some nostalgic reason.

I tend to think that I feel better about seeing Elvis and Miles with their Leica's then than I do Lenny Kravitz or Seal brandishing some silly limited edition Leica digital camera now for maximum product placement value, but hey...that's a whole different discussion.

Dezo Hoffman took many Beatles photos in the early '60s. The Rollei and Pentax introduction may have come through him. These come through a book I have "With The Beatles - the historic photographs of Dezo Hoffman"

p.s. I'm not that interested in "Celebrities" holding cameras as a "cool accessory" but I have often taken note of artists or professionals in one field also pursuing photography seriously.

Agree 100% Thanks for posting, I had seen the one of McCartney before but never the rest of that series, nice!

It is known that the comedian and cinema actor Lloyd, you know the one hanging to a clock, was a keen Leica photographer. That was said on that book by the Leica lecturer and former employee about his life with a Leica when he visited the USA. That was on his book, but I can't remember his name now.

One of the Beatles used a pre Spotmatic too, something like a S1 or S3.

Harold Lloyd

Hal, the one hanging from the clock, was a well known stereo enthusiast, along with Edgar Bergen(and Charlie McCarthy). Especially the Stereo Realist. They contributed to the best known book on stereo photography technique. They used the cameras as cameras and not, as so many in the seventies (celebs and non celebs), as pricey costume jewelry. However, we enjoy the benefits of so many high end cameras that were hardly ever used that are on the pre owned market today.

Actually, Dennis Hopper was a pretty good painter, and of course Miles was an artist supreme w/ a temperament to match. How someone like he and Bill Evans got along so well together is a marvel. Miles almost has a hint of a smile in that first photo, which probably only lasted for a millisecond before he realized what he was doing :[ But I know what you mean about "celebrities", especially today. The days of star power are long gone.

It's funny how so many of the movie and music folks were such little bitty people (I'm one too, so no judgement here). Always wondered about that. I guess that for someone w/ a movie camera, if you kept having to point it up to shoot someone you would run into all sorts of image problems if there was any architecture around them.

Che Guevara liked his Pentacon Six, apparently.

I was looking at some Bowie footage on youtube and he mentioned visiting Natalie Merchant while they were both recording around the time of 9/11 and I remembered this song on the album I bought many years ago.
Seems we have another Leica prop - M3 if I'm not mistaken and she appears to know what to do with it.
