For decades (and mostly to this very day), film companies relied on archaic models of international distribution resulting in massive discrepancies in pricing between various regional markets. These were massive, multinational, mega million dollar business.

I think you oversimplify things. That manufacturers were after their profit no one doubts. Most likely you are after such too. But international price discrepancies in general, including all consumer goods, were more complex than that. So there were import taxation trasholds, but also internal extra taxation on certain goods that affected retail price. But also the standard of living grossly differed. This made manufacturers calculate a lower profit at some and a higher profit at other markets for their ex-factory prices. in order to sell. Moreover there were even important markets were manufacturers installed prescribed retail prices. This was part of consolidating their market position, but also offered the consumer being located in a big city or a remote village to buy consumables (e.g. films) and and even have a decent offer of higher value goods (e.g. cameras). Actually such system nourished the existance of thousands of photo retailers.

Thanks Catlabs for your 448. I was simply looking for clarification on what you said. Such a clarification from you might have been: Yes it was the relative price to which I was referring or yes, in the longer run it is the relative price to which I was referring as Catlabs like other producers of film are subject to cost increases but it may be that in the short run that Catlabs can bring about such an improvement in the supply chain that Catlabs may be able to reduce its price further in absolute terms.

If I don't ask for clarification then it remains my fault if I remain confused. Sadly I remain confused by your reply. If your distribution model is stripped down to the bare bone to avoid massive discrepancies in pricing in the various regional markets then if this is related to the supply chain optimisation I presume the use of the phrase "bare bone" indicates we cannot expect any further reduction in price at least not in the short term. Or are your efforts to avoid the massive discrepancies in pricing caused by the archaic distribution models used by the large film companies separate from the supply chain optimisation model to which you referred?

I wasn't sure how your reference to the buyer's ability to save on shipping by buying more, related to the supply chain improvements to which you referred in your #440 The "cheaper to buy in bulk" saving on shipping cost is a different aspect, isn't it?

I had to look up this Scott Seiss to whom you refer. I wish I had as much hair and the apparent fame but I feel certain that lack of hair and fame may be only two of many other things that I don't have in common with him.

Here is sort of an apocryphal story. The last time I bought something without doing some minimum level of due diligence was a few years ago. I had seen this commercial on TV for a new flavor of Pop Tarts and the animated kangaroo said they were the greatest. So I bought some and let's just say they weren't the greatest. So I left a message on a social media site mentioning that they weren't the greatest. I got a tersely worded letter from Kelloggs admonishing me that I wasn't doing my part to support the nutritional breakfast foods industry and if I wasn't careful pretty soon I wouldn't be able to buy Pop Tarts at all. Duly chastened, I rushed up to the grocery store and, as they say, loaded up the truck. The problem was that not even my kids would eat them. So when they got beyond their "best by" date, I took them out of the boxes and buried them in the back yard and recycled the boxes. Did you know that not even the raccoons would dig them up and eat them? Anyway, I thought it was sort of a life lesson.

Oh, dear CatLabs… I have a very important question. Like others I’ll be using the 120!in a mix of modern and vintage red-window cameras. Does your backing paper have numbers. I’ll be needing the tracks for 8, 12, and 16 exposure.

Also, will your film work equally well for canine photography? (I’m serious about the doggie photography but, obviously, the question is nonsensical).

Do not even think of trying the hot dog flavored candy corn. Part of Brach’s tailgate mix.

But in this case you haven't even tasted the pop tarts yet, and are leaving messages saying it isn't great prematurely.

I have not said that the film isn't great. I don't know whether the film is lousy or great, or somewhere in between. I am waiting to hear the experiences and see the images from fellow Photrio members before arriving at a indication of the quality of the film.

I remember when Poptarts were invented. No frosting, only a couple of flavors. A proper apple cinnamon Poptart, toasted to perfection is a wonderful thing! ☺️

You being an exception: does anyone here take photos?

I actually spent some time in my darkroom today. I signed up for the Postcard exchange 1st time. I have until Tuesday (self imposed deadline) to get my cards printed. I found a box of Ilford PC paper, I bought locally in 2014, hopefully still in it's prime.
Got my 4x6 Speed EZ easel setup. Ready to go.

Thanks for posting that. I now know more about Branch’s tailgate mix than I do about CatLABS’ new film. We’ve got a great group of guys here.

It’s funny watching the youtube videos of people tasting that flavour, and the hamburger one.
I actually like regular candy corn!

FYI the best youtube channel ever is the one dood who eats MREs from 50-150 years ago. And he is still alive!

The funny thing is the lo-fi section of photrio has the most active photo posting!
Kinda funny with all these opinions on film, spectral whatsnots, developers, temps blahblahblah and the only place that sees action is the 110 thread!

I want to see a spec sheet on Brach's Tailgate Candy Corn! This is the first I've heard of this stuff. I can't stand the original cr*p. God it's awful stuff.
Who developed "Hamburger" fragrance? Chemical warfare for $4 a bag. 🤪

Perhaps because Photrio is more of a discussion and non-visual communication forum than a purely visual forum. People in a discussion forum generally exchange more information than they do photos. And yes, I appreciate greatly the variety you add to the site because you do post all the photos you do, but if everybody did what you do, I wouldn't be as interested in the site.
With respect to my concerns:
I can get an inkling from the information shared by CatLabs how this film might handle the subject in the first image:
As a result of the unanswered questions, I'm entirely uncertain about how the film might handle the subject in the second image:
And unlike better documented films, based on the shared information I have almost no idea whether I could get anything approaching what I want from the subject in the third image, much less figure out how to set my exposure:
I'm prepared to be sold on the film - even if it might be impractical for me to buy it. Is it all that unreasonable to ask for some of the practical information about it that CatLabs probably has? And no, I don't need to know who is making it for them (even if I am curious).

Excluding scratches and mishandling, isn't it harder to make bad film than good?

This is some organization that knows how to coat film?? I'm supposing this, don't know for sure.??

I think it will be interesting to see how it turns out.

Maybe it's the greatest Omni-speed film ever created.
