Carrying case/bag for 8x10 camera

I am looking for some suggestions on a padded bag with a handle to hand carry my 8x10 Deardorff; something along the lines of the Tenba (no longer available for 8x10 as far as I can tell). It doesn't have to be a bag intended for cameras - just something suitable.

Someone on the LFPF bought one of these for an 11x14, but they may make a smaller bag more suitable for 8x10.

Alan - thank you for the link. I checked their website and they do make a smaller one that will suit the 8x10 just fine. I will go check it out once the store reopens.

Getting harder to find now but the padded bags for older consumer video cameras (the big ones that used standard vhs tapes) are great for large format. Whether they'll be big enough for 8x10, don't know.

Renato: Not sure, but perhaps Tenba's bags, especially the ones under "Cine/HDSLR/Video" or, "Computers & Monitors" will do. They are quite expensive though.

Suitcases work well for big cameras. For an 8x10, one of the carry-on roller bags would probably work nicely. It's easy to add padding as needed, or pop in smaller padded cases for lenses and such. I use a Lowe photo backpack for my 5x7, it does ok, but has a lot of weight overhead, and even though it's physically quite large it's a pretty snug fit for the 5x7 and its required bits and bobs.

My 8X10 - a Folmer & Schwing - is not terribly portable. Camera alone weighs 15.5 lbs and measures 17X13X9". Years ago I went shopping for something to store it in. Ended up getting something like this:

Thin I paid just over $30 for it. Has two wheels and the extendable handle. Obviously my camera isn't one that is going to be carried for any distance. If I venture very far afield I strap all my gear (8X10 camera in the case, lens case, film holder case, misc. case, and tripod) to a cart I pull behind me:

BTW, what does an actual 8X10 field camera weigh? I am guessing considerably less than this beast I have been lugging around for the past 20 years.

Well, they vary quite a bit in weight. My Deardorff weighs in at about 12 pounds, sans a lens. But, there are 8x10s that weigh as little as 6.5 - 7 pounds. I'm 63 and still pack my 'Dorff and other paraphernalia over pretty good distances. I suppose...some day...I'll need to move to one of these featherweight models! Or, shoot within a 100 feet of the car!!

sorry for my cluelessness about how big a deardorff is
have you seen the ten 45 car case?
i think i can stick my 8x10 in there,
but i havne't in a while ...
it comes with a padded-case for lenses too ( "FREE!")

Try going to a Walmart or Target and looking around at the picnic cooler selection. I've found a number of useful bags that way.

I use an older version of this Mountainsmith bag to travel with my 'dorff. It's slightly insulated, and thus has a tiny bit of padding. Fits nice and tight.

For whatever reason, I recently found myself in a category at B&H where they have padded bags for audio mixers. Under Mixer Cases and Covers They seem to tend toward being square, but come in several sizes (and some aren't too steep price-wise.

For the two cents it may be worth ...

Seconding the cooler pack suggestion. REI's 24 Pack Cooler backpack looks good. Holds two twelve packs so a camera and some holders might work? It's on sale for less than 25 bucks.

I suspect I found the Mountainsmith bag at a place like REI or Eastern Mountain Sports. I have found a number of useful bags at camping stores. Outdoor Research is a favorite brand.

Reviving this thread... have people found that airlines weigh carry ons? I have a Wehman, leave for France tomorrow and my carry on with a pretty limited set up is 35 lbs. I’m nervous as hell theyre going to force me to check.

I've not experienced carry-ons getting weighed, some airlines publish size restrictions, but I've never seen them enforce that. Given the number of people that pack carry-on suitcases they can't lift above their waist, much less lift over their head, I don't think 35 pounds will be an issue.
Board the plane as soon as you can for whatever "zone" you're assigned to so that you don't have to hunt for space away from your seat, and enjoy the flight.

I believe there are size but not weight restrictions for carry-ons. I've seen size restrictions enforced but not strictly. I assume you've checked the baggage terms for your airline.

I suppose if you're a big guy or girl and still have trouble lifting it, it might draw attention and they might ask you to gate check it. Keep in mind "the fine print" says they can do pretty much anything for the safety of the aircraft.

Just makes me nervous... I think the Wehman could take a crap load of abuse but I don’t know if film holders would survive. I have options... I have a Manhattan portage that basically caries the stuff the same way my FStop Tilopa BC bag but does so without any kind of back support, it’s going to be a grind but certainly doesn’t bring any attention to the bag. I had to shave a holder down to 3 and a box of film.

That leaves me with 3 holders and 50 sheets of HP5+. It’s a two week trip but it’s certainly not 14 days of photo work. Lucky enough to have landed a grant to make work but allowed to bring my spouse (which will slow me down)

At the risk of stating the obvious:
Are you checking a bag with clothing? If so, consider putting the Wehman in a very strong suitcase and clothing in the carry-on photo bag (film also). When you arrive, switch the camera and the clothing.

There are weight limits for overhead lockers - sensibly. Though most check-ins seem to be concerned about size. The published limits seem to be around 22 lbs, though I have seen lower values for airlines doing a lot of long over-water flights.

I seem to use a large cooler on a cart for my 5x4 and 8x10 use. Good handles, and the cart takes the strain most of the time. Now that summer is here in California, there are a lot about. AirFrance has a max weight of 26 lbs combined for your carry on and personal item. My personal item is a RRS TVC33 with the head removed.

Yes, I’m checking luggage. I’ll only toss the Wehman in there if they force me to check the carry on.

One lens (210mm graphic kowa) 3 holders, my tent, and 50 sheets of HP5. I intended originally on 4 holders at a time and 75 sheets but cuts had to be made.

Virgin Atlantic is still at 22 lbs, unless you are in the really expensive seats - and then you get an extra 13 lbs. When traveling I limit myself to what I can carry effectively, which is not much more than the airline limits for a carry-on.

What about laptop bags? I don't know if the size is right, but they can be had cheaply at a thrift store. And they are usually padded.
