So, a question to follow up on my earlier post about the Fuji GSW 690 II sticky shutter.

I took the camera in for a CLA at my most trusted service shop. (This shop has worked on many other cameras for me -- two Rolleiflexes, a Yashica-Mat, Pentax 35mm gear, and another Fuji rangefinder - the GS645S.) The technician has many decades of experience, and has full service manuals for the GSW 690 II. All of which to say, I trust this guy.

Unfortunately, the technician tells me he CANNOT get the lens off the camera. As he explained it, on the GSW 690 the first step to getting the shutter out is to unscrew the front elements of the lens. After using all the techniques recommended in the service manual, and everything from his experience servicing cameras, he cannot get the lens to budge. He fears if he applies any more pressure, damage will be certain. Therefore he cannot service the camera.

I trust what he says. But I turn to the shared wisdom and experience of the group; is there any hint, trick or tactic particular to the GSW 690? Something that may have been missed or is a little-known "gotcha"?

I'm hoping to have my GSW 690 II be more than a shelf queen...

1. put fingernail polish remover (acetone) around the threads of the front element retainer ring and allow to sit for 5 to 15 minutes.
2. if acetone fails try http://liftoffinc.com/tape-remover/ available at home depot and others stores. formerly called liftoff #2, it works on most adhesives. allow to work 30 minutes to an hour.
3. metal retainer to metal barrel apply penetrating oil to the threads and allow to sit for an hour to overnight.
4. cut notches in the outer edge of the retainer ring and use a spanner wrench to turn the ring.
#2 and #3 will require some cleaning of parts once the ring is removed but will not damage anything.

I haven't seen LiftOff here in Canada. I wonder if it's basically the same as Goo Gone?

NO! Goo gone leaves an oily residue that is near impossible to get off. Do Not use it on camera gear.
Goof Off is similar but has toxic fumes requiring it to be used in a well ventilated area and I cannot guarantee it will not damage the lens coating(s). Use at your own risk.

Loctite thread locker remover is another product that will potentially work.
