Yeah, Virginia borrowed a lot of names from the English. Especially the eastern part of the state. Don't forget Gloucester, Surry (spelled differently), Middlesex, Northumberland, York, Brunswick and all of the other counties and towns named after specific people like Price William County, King George County and on and on.

And as a native, I will note that only Virginia could come up with such clear names as Charles City County.

And for further confusion, who knows the locations of the (U.S.) Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and Norfolk Naval Shipyard?

Hello Simon.

I don't think I know the person you mentioned although the name does sound vaguely familiar. If he is of a similar age to me (41), we may have attended the same schools. Mayfield school is about 100 yards from the end of Jellicoe Road and Ryde High school is about half a mile further on - I attended both.

The Isle of Wight is still very nice but it is suffering, like everywhere else probably, from every spare tiny piece of land having far too many rabbit hutch sized houses built on it. Luckiliy, most of the Island is designated as agicultural or National Trust/AONB and can't be built on.

Welcome to APUG from another very long time transparency shooter from eastern Pennsylvania, USA. Having lived in New York state, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania I can definitely tell you that probably all original 13 colonies had a lot of English town, county, Island names, etc. brought to the new world.

ah..everyone thinks their family came over on the mayflower...but it isn't true. Anyways, the pilgrims came over originally for religious freedom...and to build a better life. Those to Virginia came over as a business enterprise...for riches or were brought over to work as endentured servants. Thats the principle difference. Oh, and don't forget, the US constitution was somewhat based on the Mayflower compact...signed just off shore.
