I have 3 screens for my Canon New F1. The full metering, partial and spot metering. What screen do you use most in yours.

I have seven focusing screens for my New F1s, and three for my F1ns, I probably use the AE (center weighted screen most in my New F1 because the (centre weighted split image/ microprism) screens are more suitable to use with the AE metering prism on aperture priority mode, that I use most.
For my F1ns I tend to use the "B" split image screen.

P.S. The price these focusing screens are selling for these days is crazy, although even when the cameras were current in the 1980s they were never cheap, I can remember buying a New F1 screen new in the 80s for £ 43, which was a lot of money in those days, but as time goes on they are becoming rarer, some of them selling on eBay for more than £ 100. I'm glad I have all I will ever need.

When the New F1 is in Aperture priority mode is the shutter speed precise like a Contax RST or is the shutter speed rounded up by the cameras own computer. ie 60 ,125,250,.

The shutter speed is precise Colin to the lens aperture selected, and on shutter priority mode with the power winder or motor drive attached, the lens aperture is also precise to shutter speed selected,
in both cases and infinitely variable.

I much prefer a split screen

This is possibly my favourite SLR - attached pic of my camera.

I have a fleet of New F-1s, two F-1s and two F-1ns. I have all or nearly all of the screens for the F-1/F-1n cameras, including the L versions. I have fewer screens for the New F-1 cameras. My favorite is the AD or PD grid type. I also have AE and PE screens. When I see a D, LD or AD/PD screen for a reasonable price, I get it. I still want an AC screen for the New F-1 and will eventually find one at a an agreeable price. If I need a C type screen for now, I will use an F-1/F-1n. The grid screens are especially good for macro work and when using slower primes or zooms. I also like them for portraits. I can focus on the eyes without having to recompose.

The standard screen that the New F1 was supplied with new, was the E A split image center and microprism outer ring which is a very useful and versatile one, that can be used in most situations.

Just picked up the AI focus screen for my F 1N that seems to enlarge the focus cross hairs but I shot my first roll and I see I have to watch the focus outside of that as well. Helpful to me as my vision is not at what it used to be and is a bit better than the AE that came with it but one roll of film was just a tester.

I'm surprised at your reply flavio, the screen you describe is the D.A screen. (that I have) that's intended for architectural photography.

Looks like a well loved well used example

I think these had a reputation for the paint finish being a bit prone to scratches/flaking. This came from a shop in Japan - the brassing had been badly covered up with a Sharpie marker pen and it looked a right mess. I noticed the viewfinder/focus screen were pristine and it all worked correctly so bought it. I think it was a well used and serviced camera. Later I found under the door film plate, there were about 15 service stickers one on top of another… This F1n has the best ‘wind on experience‘ of any camera I’ve used - it’s so mechanically satisfying and like loading a gun.

Ship your camera to LZ Fotomehanika in Slovenia (specialized in F-1 cameras) and it will be mechanically satisfying too.

Yes, i like that screen! It is very bright, i can focus anywhere. And the grid lines help me with composition.

BTW I just got a Pentax LX, which some collectors (like the prestigious and prolific Les Sarile) claim the best viewfinder image clarity on a 35mm SLR. Sorry! The finder on my F-1N cameras is better. And this is comparing apples to apples, since i've serviced my Canon F-1 screens and viewfinders and I just serviced the prism optics, condenser lens, focusing screen, and mirror on my LX. Both cameras are as clear as they could be.

What I find, I never heard of the guy before. Thanks, Flavio.

He is a long-time member of a camera repair forum I'm very active in, and only recently he has opened a formal (registered with its own tax number, etc) repair shop. He has serviced many New F-1 cameras and I can vouch that this guy knows them inside-out. I service many cameras but don't dare to repair a New F-1 yet because they're more involved on the inside; you really have to know what you're doing. But the guy is able to even set the top speed to give true 1/2000, something the camera under test on Popular Photography in year 1981 or 82 was unable to reach.
