I just got a Canon EOS-1N HS with the E1 booster. The instruction manual is ambiguous about which E1 can use lithium AA batteries. The manual says the only E1 that can use lithiums has an * printed on the AE lock button. My E1 has the *, but it's printed below the AE lock button, not on the button itself.

Can my E1 use lithium batteries?

You might also consider the Energizer AA 1.5V Lithium batteries. They are much lighter then alkalines and have a lot of energy and very good power output curve across a wide temperature range. I used to used them in my 1V HS.

That’s the battery I want to use, but early versions of the E1 booster can be damaged by lithiums. The manual is confusing, probably due to translation from Japanese to English.

The * label was never printed on the actual button, but early versions had no printing at all. If you have the asterisk/star near the button, you should be OK to use lithium primaries.

At least I hope so, because I’m using them in my PB-E2.

Thanks. That's what I thought. I looked at dozens of EOS-1N HS cameras on eBay and none of them had the * printed on the button itself. The * was either printed below the button or not there at all. I'll sleep better at night knowing I'm not going to fry my 1N by using lithiums.
